One of the most underrated, underappreciated comedies of all-time.

Why this film isn't more well-known i'll never understand.

Critics give it very mediocre reviews, yet for my family and I it's one of our all-time favourites.

Can watch it over and over and never get tired of the gags.

Kingsley and Caine are an absolute delight.

Wish more people knew about it!

I definetely agree, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. I sure wish more people were to watch. If it weren't so obscure, it would probably be more popular.

I don't know the exact reason why, but this movie never gets old for me. I try to spread the word as much as possible, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. I love it!!

Yes, sir, I'm going to do nothing like she's never been done before!

This film is fantastic, one of my all time favourites too.

It is never shown on tv either which is strange because it must be cheap for them to buy/show or whatever they do.

But i noticed that the DVD ive got says its a Carlton film. From what i remember Carlton used to be a regional tv company but they went bust or lost out on a big tv deal or something so maybe that has something to do with it not being shown anywhere.

Caine and Kingsley are brilliant in this.

This film is a comedy classic! Caine & Kingsley are both absolutely superb. The gags are terrific, the script top notch and even Peter Cook & Spudgun from Bottom pop up with appearances. I can't take Michael Caine seriously after watching this.

One of the funniest comedies ever. Just brilliant!

Holmes: 'Are you sure he doesn't want to kill me?'
Watson: 'Of course not, he knows you're an idiot.'
Holmes: 'Oh, thank God!'

ClivClav, I actually just laughed out loud with your quote from the film:
Holmes: 'Are you sure he doesn't want to kill me?'
Watson: 'Of course not, he knows you're an idiot.'
Holmes: 'Oh, thank God!'

And I NEVER do that. It's just remembering how they deliver those lines. Wonderful stuff. :-)

One of the few things my wife and I have in common any more (other than hating each other's guts) is that we tend to mostly agree on the movies we like. Two exceptions: I like old horror movies, and she hates them. She loves Sherlock Holmes movies, whereas I am lukewarm toward them. Well, Without a Clue is by far my favorite Sherlock Holmes movie! This opinion is not viewed with amusement by the "better" half.

I came upon this while looking for other Holmes films, and am quite glad I did! It struck the perfect balance between drama and comedy, the gags kept me laughing, the leads were spot on hilarious, and the period sets amazing.

I wish they made more films like this!

I think it's one of those films that wasn't well understood by the media and the audience to be honest.
At first glance it's very old-fashioned and twee. When actually it probably contains some of the finest comedy performances of any film. Almost every single line from Michael Caine reduces me to tears!
There are two films in my opinion that are totally underrated comedy masterpieces.. this one is second only to Funny Bones (the most incorrectly marketed film of all time!)

It was on itv1 today and was still just as enjoyable as when I first watched it in the very early '90s.

glad to find this film is getting some appreciation. actually, 6.8 isn't a bad rating by comedy standards on imdb. they usually get stuck around the low sixes as what one person thinks is hilarious, someone else thinks is lame.

I've always loved this film, Caine plays it perfectly. I think it's one of his best performances, even though it is a comedy. In so many scenes he gives a brilliant line reading, absolutely nailing the tone it required.

Among my favourites:
"His real name is arty morty"
"yes, it is my opinion that he is dead"
"well, it's certainly been a laugh"
"it's just a picture of the eiffel tower!"

love the music as well

Just watched this, having had it on the Sky Planner for weeks. I expected a mediocre comedy to pass the time but what I got was a really enjoyable film with pich-perfect performances by the two leads and some helarious lines and moments. I laughed out loud several times, but to be honest whenever Caine came on screen I felt like chuckling. The plot might be a lazy Conan Doyle pastiche but it served it's purpose.

Underrated and underappreciated indeed!

I completely agree with you. It's an instant classic.

Never heard of it before until recently. Just watched it, and I enjoyed it a lot.
