Star Wars similarities

A farmer gets swept up in an war against an evil army that's led by a big dude in a mask who is subservient to a master with zappy lightning fingers. The farmer meets a self-assured adventurer along the way. Okay, so Willow leaves his community reluctantly, while Luke is rarin' to go. Also, some Star Wars books said that Luke and his aunt and uncle were moisture farmers, but was that actually in the movie? I don't recall.

reply

Yes I agree. You can see George Lucas's fingerprints all over Willow.

Willow = Luke
Madmartigan = Han
Sorsha = Leia
Bavmorda = Palpatine
General Kael = Vader
Airk = Lando
Fin Raziel = Yoda
The Brownies = The droids
Aldwin = Obiwan

Cherlindrea serves the same function as Obiwan's ghost in Empire. Every major character in Willow has a direct analogue in Star Wars.

Also, the escape in the horse drawn court is a lot like the speederbike chase.

reply

Hmmm, so no Chewbacca? Here we have it, conclusive proof that the X-factor that separates a timeless classic from a mediocre cult classic is the presence of a Wookie.

reply

Or perhaps Elora Danan = Chewbacca. Think about it neither could talk and instead communicated through a series or grunts and facial expressions.

reply

I swear I almost made that same joke with my original post. Some thing like Chewy = Elora (cute, messy hear, doesn't speak Enlgish)

reply

Also, there's a couple of stunts that seem straight out of Indian Jones movies.

Madmartigan being dragged behind a horse drawn cart like Indy behind a truck in Raiders, and sledding down a snow covered mountain on a shield is a lot like sledding down a snow covered mountain in Temple of Doom.

reply

To be fair Elora Dannan could also be Moses the saviour of Israel or Jesus the saviour of the Jews. Good versus evil and the promised saviour goes back long before either movie. Maybe George Lucas is just a biblical plagiarist.

OR maybe the Bible is a ripoff many many stories written before
I like when people pretend that nothing existed before the Bible was written.

reply

When did I say nothing existed before the bible? I didn't, I merely pointed out that it predates Willow and Star Wars. Of course there were writings before the bible and if there are any you know of which the bible could be accused of plagiarising then point them out to me and I'd only be too happy to investigate. Try not to put words in peoples posts if you can help it. There's a good little boy.

There's a moral to this story Del Boy but for the life of me I can't find it!

The face of one of the soldiers when they were being transformed into pigs was the same makeup design as the Gamorrean guards.

As for the general character similarities, these are all fairly common character archetypes from literature (the hero, the lovable rogue, the mentor, the jester(s), etc.).

Ellora IS Chewbacca , she just needs more blackroot!

Well, it does put hair on your chest.

reply

Since George Lucas was very involved with this movie it isn't surprising.

Can you quack like a duck when you suck?

reply

Luke was reluctant to go, he only went because his uncle and aunt were murdered and there was nothing left for him.

reply

Yes, very similar character archetypes indeed (not that I'm complaining, though).

Here's a helpful little comparison chart I created myself :-)

reply

Star Wars doesn't get to call dips on story.

It works so well because it uses one of the most archetypical stories and characters out there and that archetype is an archetype because it works since Ancient Greek theatre and probably the Pharaos!

reply

So that would make Bavmorda’s castle the Death Star.
