The werewolf scene...

The werewolf part of this movie always creeped me out. I really miss the man in a costume or werewolf animatronics they use to use. I hate the digital cartoon looking images of today!

I really like this movie. Granted it did have a lot more potential. I would of loved to have seen more monsters used and more people meeting their doom when they were trapped in the alternate universe.

Someone posted something about this should be remade. I usually HATE remakes, but remaking this one is a good idea. That way... Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, saw, etc could be used.

Scary movies new and old rules!

Yeah, the werewolf ripping a dude in half and beheading a cripple, a hot chick exploding a vampires head, an Asian midget butler making funny noises when he bows, a mummy stomping in a dudes head, bashing off a zombies head with a rock. Lots of good scenes peppered throughout, but yeah, considering where they could have taken it, it's a bit tame...but you gotta love a movie that is nothing but horror movie references!

And yeah, usually remakes suck, but I could see the new one being very tongue in cheek and comedic, much like this one, but with updated effects. And the idea of incorporating freddy/jason is interesting, but i doubt a remake of this movie would have the budget to secure the rights (excluding whether or not the studio's that own those characters would even agree). Although I agree, keep the werewolf a suit instead of CG, dog soldiers style...

Oh my gosh....."Dog Soldiers"!!! ... it is my favorite werewolf movie... None of my friends like scary movies or have ever even heard of "Dog Soldiers"...leaving me to believe I think I need some new friends. lol

Do you have a fave werewolf movie?

reply

Not too huge on werewolf movies, i enjoy the gore/effects, but as a monster they don't do much for me. But Dog Soldiers is definitely high up the list, so is Wolf (the one with Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeifer). I just saw a movie called WAXWORK from the 80s, had a funny looking werewolf (it was a dude in a suit, but it had like koala bear ears, and kind of looked like a cat also). Anyway, could you recommend some good werewolf features, not heavy on plot, with lots of gore or comedy?

PS: Any friend who don't know dog soldiers ain't no friend of mine...

"Waxwork" is in my collection!........love the "man with the one leg, dinner scene".........

Werewolf movies I recommend: ..(some people will disagree)..but, I love these:

1. "Bad Moon"
2. "The Howling"
3. "American Werewolf in London"
4. "American Werewolf in Paris"

and of course...

5. "Silver Bullet"

I hope you haven't seen all of them..

have fun -

Seen all those except bad moon. Been years since I saw the american werewolf in __ series and silver bullet, ill check those out again for sure. Howling was kind of over rated, i remember seeing it years ago and liking it, but now it's somewhat dated, and takes forever to get going, but the effects were cool.

But yeah, like i said, i'll check out those other ones...thanks for recommendations! And waxwork was awesome! Some great death scenes!

Are you serious?! 'Bad Moon'? I realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but .....really? That was one of the worst films I've ever seen in general. I'm a huge werewolf film fan and I just cannot get my head around you putting 'Bad Moon' on your top 5 werewolf film list! Especially putting it above 'The Howling' & 'Silver Bullet'!

I guess I'm just a bit speechless. And 'Dog Soldiers' (referring to another poster); again, really?! Some of the worst acting I've ever seen and the werewolves looked like bears.

You know....you should judge a film on more than just the fact that there are werewolves present ....like scriptwriting, costumes, sets...oh and acting!

Apologies if I offend...I'm done now.

I wanna be just like you. I figure all I need is a lobotomy and some tights

reply

You did not offend....

I love reading different views....but, to explain:

I didn't put "Bad Moon" at number one, meaning my number one fave. I was just making a list and put it next to number one...Sorry for the mix-up.

And , Yes, I do personally love "Dog Soldiers"...I will take bad costumed Werewolves over super fake CGI (computer cartoons) anyday!!!!...., and the acting wasn't as bad as most other horror movies I've seen.

I am curious...what were-wolf movies do you like??

reply

Not so much a Werewolf movie, as much more of a awesome Werewolf in general.... "Monster Squad". I think it was Stan Winston who did the costume? But the fact that Jon Gries plays the Wolfman perfectly and the design of the costume and FX I think is just awesome in itself. Dog soliders, Bad moon are great but I love the 80-tastic "Silver Bullet" and "Company of Wolves" with it's FX.

reply

Monster Squad had a great werewolf and a great changing scene (phone booth). It also had an excellent gill-man.

reply

Im glad you appreciate that scene......something about the screen flare and the vacant gas station (which I assume is outside of the town), with the changing scene.....I dont know what it is exactly but its really fascinating and creepy at the same time....Also I agree with the gill-man but he was actually a weak character and really not used well.......think there could have been more there...

Apologies for the delayed reply...

I like (in no particular order and I realize most are quite obvious films)...Silver Bullet, The Howling, American Werewolf in London, the Howling IV (I know it's not the best but it's closer to the book than the original Howling film and I loved the book), Ginger Snaps (ending werewolf was disappointing but I liked the story), Underworld (vampires and werewolves but still), The Company of Wolves, Wolf, Wolfen.

I agree on the CGI bit...

That is a gruesome one, which now that I think about it, Eli Roth ripped off wholesale in "Hostel 2".

Then again, I suppose Hickox probably ripped it from some other film...

"I just saw a movie called WAXWORK from the 80s, had a funny looking werewolf," hot tip, this is a waxwork messageboard, props to that guy who mentioned company of wolves though, totally forgot about that one

Loved the werewolf in this movie, the only problem I would have with the costume is the complete lack of eyes in his sockets - looks like a lot of wrinkles and that's about it.
The werewolf brushing off the chair was just too funny.

Even though this was a b-movie horror/comedy, it did have an interesting concept. I agree with wanting more scenes, you rewatch that movie and you start imagining how some of the other victims' stories played out.

The sequel brought in some more great parodies, no way it could top the original but I certainly enjoyed its attempt. I wonder if a third movie would be a better idea than a remake - if they did attempt a remake, they could not top the original's comedic value so they should stick with a serious horror movie version.

Someone else was posting about werewolf movies worth watching. Now I know it gets a lot of flak but I would recommend Van Helsing - it's not a terrible plot and the werewolf is gorgeous.

reply

I thought it was clever how they executed this scene.

We think we're still in the werewolf world but the camera pans out to show that the young guy has now become apart of the wax exhibit.

I thought it was very clever and from that i realised that i was really going to like this film.

The werewolf was great and truly creepy in this film. Probably my favorite scene in the whole movie.

The scene certainly scared the crap out of me as a kid. By todays standards people might think it's cheesy and that the costume sucks but I honestly STILL think it's pretty creepy!

I loved this movie as well. The mummy, werewolf and the Dracula scenes all scared me. I watched this when I was around 12 and it scared the crap out of me. Also, I would love a remake.

I loved the werewolf scene in this movie, and that none other than John Rhys-Davis plays the werewolf before the transformation!
