When they switch bodies the dad (who is now really the son) behaves and talks in a manner at odds with the way that the son talked and behaved in the first place.

Right, there's no attempt to capture the old characters in the new bodies. I also found the transformation odd because it doesn't change their faces -- the father shrinks and the son grows, but when it's complete, they look just like they did before (wearing the other person's clothes).

Must have been a hard part to act for a child so he prob just did a stereotypical, what he saw as a 'dad' character?

Yeah, considering Fred Savage didnt even act so much as an obnoxious kid in the fist place Judge Reinhold clearly had to make something up to give the kid some sort of personality.

When theres no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.
