have anything to do with Tomas' refusal to sign the retraction regarding his article on Communists??(ie sabotage?) or has it more to do with the fact the truck was a complete shytbox?

I'm not absolutely sure, but I tend towards the first explanation of the original poster. I don't know why exactly, but it seems to add some extra depth to the situation.

There is zero evidence in the film that the truck's breaks were the result of communist sabotage. The truck was a P-O-S, and that's it.

It doesn't really matter anyways - the events are as real as life, unfolding tragically and heartbreakingly.
