Favorite song from the movie?

I think this is the best music documentary I have ever seen. Critics may not have liked it, but I love it!

My favorite song in the movie is With or Without You. I love the extra verse that Bono adds in that version. It makes the song even better. Someday they really should update the song and add those lyrics in, so more people can hear it too.

I really love the gospel version of still haven't found and all along the watchtower is also pretty cool. can't wait to see the guys live, I hope there's a tour next year...

reply

I really couldn't choose a favorite song, but if I had to, I would pick "Where the Streets Have No Name." I love the chiming/echoing guitar solo in the beginning and ending of the song, and was in awe when I saw it performed live. I saw U2 in concert at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas in '92, and it was even better. I hope there is a tour soon.

June 6, 2006: Even though this one didn't make it to the final cut of the movie, their performance of "One Tree Hill" was breathtaking. This was shot during The Joshua Tree Tour (probably at the Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe AZ). This footage is the last video on "The Best of U2 1980-1990." Absoultely amazing performance. I was able to catch the Las Vegas show on Nov. 5 2005, and, as I expected, it was like a religious experience (well, sort of). Amazing.

I've just got one thing to say to you: F.O.A.D (quoting one of Larry's favorite acronyms)

~*The sky falls, you feel like it’s a beautiful day*~ Bono is my hero

That's me in my place then.

"Whooooohoo. Whooooohohoo. Whooooohoo. Whooooohohoo. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah." - Bono, 2004. Lyrical mastermind

Wow. Super_Fu_Manchu = Maddox wannabe.

Of course, Super_Fu_Manchu will act like he/she has no idea what I'm talking about. How subtle.

Anyway, U2 are awesome and they're my favorite band. I really enjoyed "Bad" and "Exit" the most, though.

"Someone pass the asparagus."

reply

I know maddox yeah yeah, but he doesn't have a patent on attacking Bono's meagre lyrical talent. In case you haven't noticed, quite a lot of people are doing that now.

Anyway, if you want good lyrics listen to Bob Dylan.

Yeah buddy, time to get off Maddox's nuts. And btw, Bob Dylan is a fan of U2's work, you'd know that if you'd done your research.

I like Heartland, which was originally recorded for the Joshua Tree record, beautiful song.
Bono Rules!

reply

I love bad, when it goes into slow motion. It's beautiful. Then Bono starts singing the rolling stones. It's my favorite U2 song and my second favorite in the movie. 1st is With or without you. I just love how it's filmed. And how Bono is standing above the grate thing and the light is shining through. It's just great.

U2, best band in the world!

Good Point...dylan also co-wrote and plays on the Rattle and Hum album (love rescue me)

U2 Rule!!!

Defenitly Van diemen's Land (even if its sang by the edge)
All I want is you is great too

I liked with or without you also. I read that bono originally wanted the recording in joshua tree to end with the climax like the live version but the edge talked him into fading it out quietly...i also like in god's country..spectacular drumming..amazing tom control.

reply

It's cool how this is still getting responses after a year and a half from when I originally posted it!!!

Shinramen, thanks for the info about "With Or Without You."
I too liked "In God's Country", as well as, "Love Rescue Me."

I still love U2's "Joshua Tree" and "Rattle & Hum" era the best.

"Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?"

I just picked up the DVD last week and loved it!

My favourite song .. hmm ... hard to narrow it down to just one, but I loved the R&H version of Sunday Bloody Sunday, how it starts off slow then Larry starts pounding the drums halfway through, just awesome!

Bullet The Blue Sky is also one of my favourites.

I had the pleasure of seeing the band in concert last month and they are as good as ever. ;)

"Exit"... third song I think. The part where Bono throws in Van Morisons Gloria G-L-O-R-I-A. And the song just explodes with guitars Love it.

For me, it's a tie between Bullet the Blue Sky, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and Bad.

reply

No one mentioned "Pride"? That's always been my favorite U2 song and it's so joyful and triumphant, just a perfect climax to the movie. Bono's face as the audience sings at the end is one of the most beautiful things ever. I also love his directive before the last chorus: "For the Reverend Martin Luther King... sing!" And Adam's face when he's standing back by Larry, the way he's just beaming.

Favorite line: "It's a musical journey." - Larry

reply

Oh, and in regards to "With or Without You"... the extra "verse" is actually a couple of lines from Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart". U2 isn't a band who goes back and revisits their old material, so I don't really foresee them doing a new version of the song.

reply

Really? Hmm...."Love Will Tear Us Apart" is one of my favorite songs. I don't recall the extra verse being from that song. I'll have to look up the lyrics. Are you sure it's that particular Joy Division song?

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans?

reply

Am I the only one around here that loves "Van Diemens Land" and "All I want is you" ??
Come on, they are beatifull songs!!!

reply

so i guess when they re-did "sweetest thing" in 2000 and "one" with mary j blige in 2006 was a total surprise? i have the interview on video where the edge says that the extra part at the end (not sure about the verse)was intended by bono.

reply

Definetely "Bad". It's one of my favorite tunes and it's one of those songs that'll sound good both studio AND live (fun to play on the guitar too!) I liked the music even though I wasn't too crazy about this movie.

reply

Definetely "BAD"!!!!!! Great performance by Bono, he looked very inspired when it was filmed. Nice mix between the original version and the Rolling Stones songs.

The frustration and grief in Sunday, Bloody Sunday grabs me by the throat.

reply

I agree, that's a moment that brings a tear to my eye. The duet with BB King, "When Loves Comes to Town," hasn't been mentioned in this thread for some reason, but I loved it. Great lyric, and the old man still has the chops; the combo of Lucille and Edge is sweet.

reply

Wow I'm surprised 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' isn't running away with it. That is a classic moment in Rock & Roll history. Ah well.

I loved every song in here, and I agree, 'Bad' was good, and 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' is the best recording of it, in my opinion. The way the band just sorta stands back and looks at what they've inspired...priceless.

'Pride' is a great song also (in fact I just realized I'm listening to it right now), as is 'Streets.' However, I just have to say 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' for its emotional power. And when Bono says that he doesn't think it should be in the farewell album because nobody will understand, for once, he's being too modest. I am 13, and I FELT their pain.

Sunday Bloody Sunday gets my vote!
