U2 The Most Overrated Band Ever

I don't usually write posts like this. And I know U2 has a home field advantage on this board. But I think they are the most overrated band ever. I admit I liked them in the early '80s. They were a breath of fresh air. But by the end of the '80s I soured on them. I think my opinion changed after seeing them live in 1987. Many people told me they were an amazing live band. I think that was because during the '80s a lot of kids first concert was U2 and didn't have much to compare them to. They played the same songs in the same order every night. The Edge played the same four chords every song. It was a stadium show, but they didn't use video screens. They are a necessary evil for stadium shows. A few years later they started performing in front of giant video screens. I think they were desperate to create some excitement. Bono is a good singer, but a pompous jerk. They are not good musicians. I think they rely on producers to try to sound relevant. And for some reason a lot of critics are fascinated with them.

These criticisms are pretty murky. The usage of video screens is meant to ENHANCE the concert experience, not 'generate excitement'. And what makes Bono a 'pompous jerk'? Yes, he can be self-important, but he also is a gifted artist, and a key supporter of human rights and political causes. He is certainly not so self-absorbed that he ignores the rest of the planet. And it's not only critics that like U2 - the proof is the time I saw them live. The crowd clearly loved the show - and the band.

I've been a fan for over 30 years, I've seen them live countless times and in my opinion they've grown with age. They still sell out huge tours so I don't understand where the hugely over-rated idea comes from.
Maybe you just grew out of them or didn't enjoy the different directions they went musically but they're certainly not over-rated.

Maybe you are just a dick ?

how does a pomopous jerk make him a bad musician?? you said he was a good singer, end of story! your personal opinion does not affect his musical ability and he is the most important person in the band as the main writer of the songs and motivator

Pink Floyd did this way before U2, I guess that makes them a terrible band?

I saw them in concert back in the 80s. Pretty incredible, even if the music is simplistic.

You don't like them.

So?
