Schmoedipus song

First, I will go and tell you that I have neither seen this or the original Play for Today: Schmoedpius that this was based on. But I have heard some of the song from this simply because I wanted to hear Gary Oldman sing. And, I must admit, he sang well. Though I could do without the background angelic music...

You can find the net recording here:

But I noticed on the Schmoedipus one, sung by Tim Curry, (who I simply adore!) that almost all the words are different. From what I could hear (the sound quality for the Track 29 version was awful!), all the "M is for...Mother...means the world to me" part was different until "...and regular" then they were exactly the same, which isn't much of the song.

You can find the Tim Curry version here:

I wonder why they changed all that? Hmm...

I just thought this was interesting. If anyone else notices anything else between the two that was very different and "interesting", please respond.

Uh, wow I just found something. Actually I didn't find it now, I just noticed it. The name of the son was changed from Glen to Martin. More unexplainable stuff...

No, Dennis Potter wrote them both.

He had the rights because he wrote the script in the first place.

Hmm... I may be too young to know anything... who's Tom Lehrer?

I was talking about the TV "Play for Today" thingy from 1974. I thought there was only one copy in the Museum of TV and Radio in New York City. I was thinking maybe there were more and I might actually find it somewhere. That would RULE!!! Cos Tim Curry was very adorable in that. He didn't sound anything like he did in Rocky Horror, which I personally don't mind either...

Tom Lehrer used to write and sing silly (or what they call "novelty") songs in the 50s and 60s. I heard him when I was in high school in the 70s and listened to "Dr. Demento," a radio program that played only funny, filk and satirical songs.

I doubt I'll ever get to see the play you're talking about because I'm nowhere near NYC!

reply

I'll probably get to see it this summer- I'm going to New York. I am curious what it will exactly be about.
