question for those that listened to the DVD commentary

Not sure of the exact running time but it is around the time in the film when Harvey and Anne Bancroft continue the argument in the apartment (after the scene at the cemetery); Harvey, in the DVD commentary, mentions a "recent" cover in Vanity Fair Magazine,("recent" at the time the commentary was recorded) featuring the rise in gay characters on TV, he says that most gay characters are played by straights except for one in the magazine cover who threatens to sue if outed. Something like that...anyone know which cover or actor he's refering? I'm assuming the magazine came out in 2003 or 2004.

Thank you.

Can't swear, of course, but I'd bet he's referring to Sean Hayes from "Will & Grace".

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Yeah--I think it was confirmed that it was Sean Hayes. He's never come out officially but come on! The guy is obvious!

I saw an interview last night with John Barrowman (of Torchwood and Doctor Who fame), who screen-tested for the role of Will when Will & Grace was first being cast (and missed out on the part because, they told him, he didn't "read" as sufficiently gay on-screen, which is kinda hilarious). Barrowman suggested that American audiences are generally more comfortable with a straight actor playing gay, than if the actor cast in a gay role is actually openly gay in real life; the interviewer said they obviously had cast a gay man in the secondary role of Jack, but Barrowman was quick to jump in (he made some comment about covering them legally) and point out that Hayes has never publicly stated he was gay.

All bases covered, Barrowman then got a very puckish look on his face, and said "But come on, the guy's got stretch marks in the corner of his mouth, for god's sake, so he does he think he's fooling?"

It was maybe unkind, and probably completely inappropriate, but it was also very, very funny.

Hell, some of the best jokes are inappropriate. I'm a Gay man and I think that Barrowman's comment was hilarious. Really we have to sustain the ability to laugh at ourselves; in my opinion it is a matter of survival.

Harvey is such a tease, lol.
I respect him though for keeping it to his self.

I have this DVD and I was just re-watching the commentary (re-listening? lol)and considering when the commentary likely took place, I was definitely thinking that he had to have been referring to Sean Hayes. I've never heard one way or the other, but it seems likely for sure.
