Bizarre theory: Totoro is Death?

Okay I came across this bizarre theory about Totoro the movie, note that this is not my intepretation, just what I saw other people were discussing:

1.It is saying that Totoro is in fact messenger of Death, and whoever sees him will soon die. The hospital that the sister's mother was in was based on a real hospital for terminally-ill patients.

2. Later in the story the villagers find a slipper in a pond, which is in fact May's, at this point she has already drowned in the pond. Satsuki lied that the slipper wasn't Mei's out of denial. Ever since this scene, the sisters appeared to have no shadow.

3. Satsuki pleaded the Totoro and the cat-bus to take her to where Mei is, while on the cat-bus, says "Nobody can see us...", this scene is Satsuki leading herself to the land of the dead (by taking the cat-bus).

4. At the hospital, the mother says "I think I feel May and Satsuki smiling there in that tree..." Why don't the sisters go and see their mom if they are already there? Why do they just leave the corn there instead? It is said that the sisters were dead at that point, and the Japanese pronunciation of "corn" is similar to "kill child".

5. The final scenes seem to be a happy epilogue, but they in fact happened "before" the major events in the movie.

6. The movie was set in a place in Japan where there was a case of murdering of two sisters which happened in the 60s. This event took place on May 1st, while the sister's names are Satsuki (May in Japanese) and Mei (May in English). In the real life case, the younger sister was missing first and the older sister was seen to be looking for her frantically. Nest day, the younger sister's body was found in the forest (stabbed to death). The older sister was in such a state of shock and kept rambling ambiguous words about seeing a "cat monster", "great big racoon monster" etc to the police. The sisters were in fact from a single-parent family (mother died of illness).

Ever since these rumors started to circulate, people have been calling Ghibli for verification "is Totoro Death" "Why don't the sisters have shadows later in the movie", and Ghibli made announcment on their blog site about the shadow issue saying that there was no shadow because the animators decided there was no shadow needed in those scenes (maybe bc of light source etc).

Here is Ghibli's blog site with the responses (anyone knows Japanese, can you verify?): http://www.ghibli.jp/15diary/003717.html

I personally was a bit shocked to learn of this theory, kind of skeptical really, because the details of the "real-life" murder event are really sketchy, and how the older sister died was not said. It's just hard to verify. And 5. the issue with the epilogue being prologue, wasn't there a baby brother at the end?...How can that be before the story...

So what do you think...Too much BS? Or eerie coincidence?

Let nobody tell you what to do, gotta be the judge and the jury, too!

I am watching this movie again in a totally different light.

Excellent observation you.

reply

What a crock of ****! That is a wild rumour based on half assed detective work. No they do NOT die in the movie and Totoro is NOT death.

Jesus. The things people come up with...

reply

Its not a rumor, its a theory.

Kind of made this movie more interesting from what little; my opnion.

A theory is the highest honor a supposition can achieve. It has to be backed up by a breadth of evidence so large and undeniable that statistical doubt is as close to zero as possible. This is not a theory, you twit.

reply

You're thinking of a theorem. Theories are conceptual rhetoric and, by their very purpose as an argument, considered temporarily true.

reply

Nice try... you twit.

Like someone else said, it's not a rumour it's just a theory. They are just having some fun with the story. There is nothing wrong about having theories about your favorite films. Chill out.

reply

Nonsense. Funny, in some sort of way, even interesting; but nonsense anyway.

"Why don't the sisters have shadows later in the movie" ?
May be because "later" they have almost no occasion to cast a shadow, because there is practically no sun ?
Besides, if the "Nobody can see us..." means that they are "in the land of dead", the shadow issue should also apply to the catbus; but he clearly has shadows.
Even more conclusive, if you watch when Satsuki sits inside the catbus, she casts a shadow.

"Why don't the sisters go and see their mom if they are already there? Why do they just leave the corn there instead?"

I personally loved that; I felt that that was one of the many stroke of genius of the movie. But I won't try to explain.

reply

The thing is that the DID see her. Seeing that she was fine and not dying was enough for them. They left the corn and then went back home again.

How would they have explained being able to get to the hospital if they had decided to barge in on their parents?? Their parents wouldnt have believed a catbus brought them!

She wasnt dying! She had T.B, but she was being treated for it. Her condition was stable. They only kept her in longer because she had caught a cold and the hospital were playing it safe.

She made a full recovery and returns home!

I think it is probably just a coincidence, as this movie seems to me to obviously be a children's movie about spirits only children can see. But it is still a very interesting theory, and one can definitely interpret the movie that way if he or she wants to. It puts a whole new, dark twist on the movie, which is a little unsettling, but interesting nonetheless. But I really prefer to think of Totoro as a benevolent being, and not a messenger of death!

reply

Just a note, not that I believe this theory - even if Totoro was a messenger of death, I would still see him as benevolent. He was never shown to be a malevolent creature.

i heard this theory too
i kinda lyk it... cuz when Satsuki wantd the bus to take her to Mei, the destination kinda paused on ___ Cemetery (cant remember the name)
and when Kanta told Satsuki they found the slipper and she pictured it in her head and it was the same as the one the Nanny showed her...
maybe the movie was dedicated to the murder. and the happy ending and stuff was just to make it a suitable for kids
but yes its very hard to verify

Actually, Mei's sandals are different from the sandal Nanny finds in the pond. If you look at the scene where Mei slips on her sandals (after she's seen Satsuki cry), you'll notice that each of them has two parallel red straps. The one Nanny finds in the pond has crossed straps, and it also - unlike Mei's sandals - has a small dot/pearl/flower on the straps.

The "flashback" when Kanta tells Satsuki that "they found a sandal in the pond" shows the actual sandal they found - which isn't Mei's. Thus I doubt the flashback is supposed to show what Satsuki imagined, but rather show the viewer what they actually found.

I think this is a good observation, and maybe the director was inspired by these events. Look at chihiro, dealing with the spiritual world is obviously not new to him.. But maybe he wanted to make this story in to a happy ending story. Take a sad song and make it better;)

reply

I dont know I just saw the movie last night and saw this discussion. The ending when they found the little sister she ran and hugged the nanny and that Kana was there too. So it kind of debunks this theory with regarding the two sisters being dead at the end, but I have to say this was an interesting read.

reply

wow! thankx for sharing this! but i don't think they died! cuz if you notice at the end while giving the credits they keep showing things that happened aft the last scene..... like having their mom back, playing with totoro and stuff!!

This is an interesting theory but it is wrong. I have proof that this theory is wrong, I even checked the movie.

The main proof I have is the sandal.

2. Later in the story the villagers find a slipper in a pond, which is in fact May's, at this point she has already drowned in the pond. Satsuki lied that the slipper wasn't Mei's out of denial. Ever since this scene, the sisters appeared to have no shadow.

When Mei sees satsuki crying with the Nanny person mei leaves the house. When she does you get a close up of her shoes. The are red with strips going across. When Nanny shows satsuki the shoes that were in the lake the shoes are pink, the strips go diagonally and there is a little flower in the middle. And there were no shadows 'cause it was too dark.

That is my proof that totoro is NOT death! :)

"Ever since this scene, the sisters appeared to have no shadow"

Japanese ghosts cast shadows, but don't have feet.

English Language Anime: Dub it, don't pervert it.
