So why no remake?

This question really baffels me. It was low-budget cult hit, who cares what it did at the box office.

Aspects of the story are right on point with today's society. A disappearing middle class, a sense that the media is controlling us, smart phone addiction (shown in the movie as tv addiction), trust in the government, a reported lack empathy for our fellow man.

This movie could also be viewed as anti-wealth, anti-capitalist, even anti-semitic.. Perhaps because decision makers in Hollywood are already well off, they don't want to help further ignite a class war.

Also, it could stir up/increase the number of crazies out there who's world view is shall we say, 'unique'.

With some ode to Piper in the movie. The Rock is the obvious choice for the lead role.

Or

You could make it a serious drama, put in a Cumberbatch brainy type, rewrite the script so that the first action after putting on the glasses is NOT to let the aliens know and go berzerk with a shotgun....but still have the 8 min fight scene.

The rock....ha ha ha ha ha ha

it's better to keep this movie @ a low profile.

too many radical ideas as you listed.. more of a think for yourself VS obey blindly.
interesting hats with the label OBEY became quite popular in the 21st century.....

This film touches on subjects that is not meant be repeated. This film is even more "in vogue" now than 30 years ago.

Hollywood is controlled by corporate interests and even partially funded by the state department now. Nothing subversive gets past the censors.
