Don't mistake lack of talent for genius.

Ya know, I am at a complete and utter lack for words regarding the posts that I have read on this movie. I have watched it probably, I'd say, 16 times at least. I think most peoples posts are completely and utterly ridiculous. It is a great movie for what it is, yes. It was a great accheivement. Especially for one man to do practically alone. But that does not change the fact that it is an absolutely horrible example of modern cinema. Even for being almost 20 years old. I have read everyone posts about "How wonderful" this movie is... Peter Steele of Type O Negative said it best... "Don't mistake lack of talent for genius." Fun to watch, but cut the crap. It is not some great and philosophic metaphor for technology's influence on life. It is some freak psycho whacked out japanese metal fetishists gorified wet dream, done in a well defined, stylish manner. Nothing wrong with that at all. Let's just be real about what it is. In closing though, I would never say that it is the "Worst Movie Ever". That title should be awarded to things like the Scarecrow horror series. Dreamcatcher by Stephen King. Vulgar by Kevin Smith. Or, the knock-off American Pie sequels, Band Camp and Naked Mile. Or better yet, how about Arnie vs. the Devil, End of Days style. Now, those movies are worthy of the title of "Worst Movie Ever". How could they *beep* Gabriel Byrnes as the Devil? Is there no shame?

Thanks

Here's what someone else wrote as well:

First of all, I don't even want to hear any 'you didn't get it', 'symbolism' or 'artistic' crap, because this is very simply an awful waste of film. If you can't realize that this movie is merely a terrible display of pure ineptitude and super-lame filmmaking, then you are an idiot.

Seriously, I'm positive that if I filmed myself taking a huge dump in black and white, throw in a few 'artsy' shots of the turd whizzing around the bowl in wide-angle, fast forward...etc... there would be someone out there actually ENJOYING it, ranting and raving about how the circling turd represents the cyclic nature of all things, time, the seasons..etc... until finally, when that big chunk of poop drops down the hole, that is symbolic of death and raises question about metaphysisim and the origin of the universe....

Wake up people! Sometimes a bad movie is just a bad movie, and this one is probably the worst. So if you actually like this pathetic waste of time, then you are a moron.

Now my words:

That was another poster's words. I agree for the most part. Here's something to think about all you defenders of this movie and all that stuff out there that tries to be different and so often fails yet you jump on it like it's your own thing and hate anyone who tries to follow cause it's your little personal baby: as a designer I used to think, "Fuq people if they can't understand my designs. They don't know what I know. They don't understand design." Ok, that's one way of looking at it. But why am I designing?(why is this director making Tetsuo?) FOR OTHERS TO SEE. DUH!! If the general public doesn't get it(EVEN IF YOU ARE HAPPY WITH YOUR OWN WORK AND IT'S THAT WHAT YOU SET OUT TO DO!) you failed. If you want to be counted as success you have to design/create/build/paint/sing/fuq/shiit/kill/faaart/lick/eat/run/glue/WHATEVER YOU DO in a way that others(READ THAT WORD STUPID PEOPLE - OTHERS(NOT YOURSELF)(AND IF IT'S FOR YOURSELF THEN DON'T FUQING RELEASE IT INTO THE PUBLIC'S EYE)!!!!) can associate with it, and befriend it without feeling like they are compromising or have to close an eye to 50% of what's going on just to smile and say "Yeah, ok."

In all fairness I try hard to give artists their space and direction and let it grow on me. SOME PIECES OF ART DO NOT WORK! WAKE UP AND STOP DEFENDING TRASH WHEN IT'S NOTHING BUT TRASH! Alot of the films I have seen are trash but those artists that know that EARN RESPECT BECAUSE WHEN YOU HEAR THEM TALK ABOUT THEIR WORK LIKE IT'S TRASH YOU THINK "PROPS TO YOU DUDE". They know they have a little project that won't go further than what it already is. But when you have people who defend their trash to their grave you think, "What a loser" and that's how it goes people. STOP DEFENDING THIS WHEN IT'S NOT WORKING EXCEPT FOR THE ARTIST HIMSELF! IT'S NOT WORKING FOR YOU, YOU JUST WANT IT TO! And you little stupids can all reply and try and defend or explain it into reasoning but at the end of the day this will still remain as fact: YOU WANT THIS TO WORK FOR YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE JUST SO MUCH SMARTER AND BETTER THAN THE REST(LAUGHABLE WHEN YOU THINK THERE IS NOTHING TO GET FROM ALOT OF TRASH THAT IS MADE BECAUSE MAYBE THAT'S ALL IT WAS MEANT TO BE, INTENTIONALLY OR NOT.) But you guys go ahead and do all the writing you want, it won't change the fact of what this really is. A waste of time for real movie goers, like myself, looking for pieces that should be viewed before your life runs out!

Now, back to the real works of art.

Why do so many seem to think that just because someone likes something that could never hope to be mainstream that they must be getting off on a superiority trip?
Probably because that happens often enough, but I agree that stereotyping to say that most people who like it fit that description is as unfair as stereotyping the folks who think that films like Freddy Got Fingered, Fear dot Com or Alvin and the Chipmunks are excellent as being unintelligent, ignorant, unfamiliar with various kinds of films, etc.

The OP claims he/she hates this film, but if he/she hated it so damn much, then WHY THE HELL did you WATCH it SIXTEEN TIMES? There is NO way in hell you could get me to watch a movie I straight-up hate SIXTEEN TIMES! That's insanity! That's some total *beep* madness right there! BTW, I loved TETSUO---it's one of the few films I've seen that damn near seared my eyeballs off with its over-the-top intense insanity/creativity!! The film is crazy as hell, and actually, unless another claimed in another thread, you really don't need any drugs/alcohol to enjoy it because it's damn near a mind-blowing head trip in itself. (Plus I think Shinya Tsukamoto, the director, is borderline schizoid---I honestly believe there is NO way a NORMAL person could have made this film, which I why I like it!)I think the OP actually likes this damn film, but would rather throw themselves off the Golden Gate bridge before admitting it,so therefore he/she dogs the hell out of the film to justify why he/she even looked at it in the first place!! Ha ha ha ha ha! That's gotta be the truth! Obviously it's got a hell of a lot of SOMETHING going for it, or the OP wouldn't even discuss it in the first place!

Cry some more.

Super-lame film making? Given this contains some of the most amazing stop-motion ever you're wrong there, even if you think every other element of the film is crap.

Oh, and I didn't mistake lack of talent for genius, genius would never involve the phrase "super-lame".

You're basically telling people who enjoy the movie, to stop enjoying it because everyone else does. Just because something isn't marketed towards the general public doesn't mean it isn't marketed towards anyone. Some of us actually ENJOY watching this messed up stuff, and it's good that someone makes movies for us. It's the big studio "we've gotta make movies that won't upset anyone" mentality that is the reason hollywood coughs up so much generic crap thats all the same.

This is a very "populist" attitude you put forth. Churning out media for a marketplace is IMO contrary to what an artist does. Remember that even the word "art" is a form of the word "be". It is not a portfolio made to impress, or even necessarily a message to be understood, but rather an attempt to use whatever one has to capture their own state of mind. That is what thou art. Not everything artists make is ever seen by others. Many artists have had the most exposure after they have died. If you study a bit of psychology, behaviorism, sociology, etc - you will find that people will decide to associate with things for the most arbitrary of reasons. This cannot be the artist's problem. People have goals, so anybody who isn't cattle can decide when something succeeds or fails to achieve them. I could say that by hoping to entertain other people that you fail to be a proper individualist, but that would be arrogant of me to say, since you explain that this isn't what you set out to do. Hoping for others to associate is called "entertainment", it is not neccessarily the same thing as expression.

How is it then, that an artist in your world is supposed to even know whether others like their work? Guess? Ask some know-it-all such as you? You say "back to the real works of art", but your approach sounds more like the audience pre-screening tests which they do for Hollywood potboilers. If you haven't noticed, it reduces original ideas and results in lowest-common-denominator filmmaking. In short, nobody knows what anybody will think of art until they can experience it. Another thing you don't appear to consider is that a public might not actually "get" it, but like it on another basis, assuming that it has different meanings than the artist intended. According to yolur above post, this would also be a failure on the part of the artist, but then you probably wouldn't mind. Personally, I've done a lot of work which I thought was a joke but which generated a lot of interest in me. I've met others who thought it was crap. Maybe I should hire a polling agency to get me some statistics before I think about excreting any more media...

And get over yourself. Yelling "IT'S TRASH!" doesn't make you a critic.

Will Rogers never met you apparently.

I hope you get tetnus.

To the OP; cyborg264..

This is what it says on the back of my "Tetsuo" DVD:

"It was the work of Shinya Tsukamoto, particularly his Tetsuo films, which paved the way for modern day Japanese directors such as Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer) and Hideo Nakata (Ringu) as well as influencing many western directors, such as Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill), David Flincher (Fight Club) and the Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix)".

I'd also like to note Darren Aronofsky referenced "Tetsuo" in his debut film, "Pi". Which I personally think is a masterpiece.

That's alot of popular directors that don't share your "populist" views. I guess they see the genius in "Tetsuo", you fail to see.

Last film seen: Tetsuo: The Iron Man 7/10
