What a piece of crap

Just watched it and it was so preachy and so like a filmed play that I found it to be just a piece of crap. I guess I am the only one that feels this way but that's ok.

I was never in the chorus!

reply

well it was a play originally.

I love Dustin Hoffman!

Without so much as a minute of introspection you dismiss this thought provoking dramatic (and comic) treatise with the accusation of it's being "too preachy". Are you suggesting it's pedantic? You don't elaborate, or even explain what you mean (specifically) by it's being preachy. Besides, you seem to assume the role of the lone iconoclast, persecuted for your originality in condemning it, presumably in order to redirect us, (the misguided majority) whom you assume don't share your esoteric insights that reveal just how crappy this movie actually is, despite the humor and enjoyment we've elicited by means of investing some thought in watching the film. It's power as an original and prophetic drama delving into TERRORISM can't be, in good faith, dismissed so whimsically. Not only does it concern itself with the pertinent theme of terrorism, but it's honest, it's comically self-critical, and it's dramatically loaded with meaty episodes and characters that keep you interested in following it to it's inevitable conclusion.
Forgive me, but I find this Bogosian guy more entertaining and funny than Howard Stern (not just a comic caricature of Stern). I can't stand either one of them, (but they both intend it to be that way). So this movie goes way beyond a splice of life story of the radio business, and it becomes noir-ish as it pokes around politically like Costa-Gavras' Z, ending in murder. Too bad you're not receptive to the nuance and variations that are so plentiful in this movie, because whether you enjoy them or not, they're there.

Very well stated, mica. I agree wholeheartedly.

Thank you for your approbation, A_G. The post that was deleted after my comment was so vile and threatening , the guy must be certifiable, and would try to locate contributors here if he were able, in order to bring his violent thoughts into fruition. It's rare and pleasing when you get a generous comment on these boards (let alone any blog). The vitriol and hatred in which so many viewers participate in sharing their views is so disconcerting I can barely believe they lead peaceful lives. I just watched Anne Coulter smilingly tell Chris Matthews and a huge audience of college kids, she wished John Edwards had been killed in a terrorist attack, and had previously called him a fgt (homosexual), and then go on to castigate his dying wife with no grounds at all, just merely a conviction that she's in some esoteric way better than the two of them. (I'm not a supporter of Edwards, but the way she expressed herself infuriated me and put irrational emotional thoughts in my head. I'm genuinely worried about the tenor these people assume. But, at any rate thanks so much for your generous comment.

Hi, mica,

I'm very happy to give compliments when they're due. And you deserved a compliment for your words regarding TALK RADIO. It is, I agree, very unusual for people to exchange compliments on the 'net. Usually, it's anonymous individuals at eachother's throats. However, I like to give credit where credit is due. I'm no 12-yr-old punk who suddenly has bravery in his heart because of this medium. I am who I am whether it's here or face to face. That is, I am no phony. What is, *is*, with me. And again, I'm grateful for your seemingly genuine words (and I believe that they *are* genuine, by the way). I hope that all is relatively well on your end, my friend.

Take care of yourself.

Best regards,

American Ghoul

Probably one of the best retorts in the history of IMDB. Nice work, Mica...I will of course, be stealing it and using liberally in conversations over the coming weekends...and like yourself, probably keeping my tongue firmly in my cheek.

The original posters name...was that a combination of name...city of abode and IQ?

Thanks for your kindness and friendly humor, DV movieman. I've often been puzzled by the annoyingly trivial and misleading cliché, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". To be misled by this trite little didacticism is a real fount from which unsupported allegations and misinformed ignorance is certain to follow. Simply put, a Rembrandt is beautiful, whether or not we recognize it as such, and my child's watercolors are not aesthetic triumphs, regardless of my insistence that they're chef d'oeuvres, borne out of my egotism and naivety. When critics base their opinions on this concept, that beauty is merely subjective, any further expansion will be unfounded, yielding wrong conclusions. (The best proponent of the true nature of beauty, as having permanence in its nature as a virtue, is Socrates, as taught by his student Plato). But, it only takes an effort of quiet introspection to see the truth in this important concept which places a real wall obscuring aesthetic judgement when the thinker posits ideas stemming from a misunderstanding of the nature and quality of exceptional human efforts in the humanities.

Nobody really talks that way. While I agree with what was said, I doubt very much that is your manner of communicating. You dont think that was a bit over the top? I promise, that was not a dig, I just found it so hard to believe that someone would actually type like that.

Whole Internet: This movie is a masterpiece!!

One Guy: Um, yeah, not so much. But suit yourself.

Even though your comment was written 10 years ago, I am just reading it now and I must concur,it is one of the most intelligent well thought and well stated responses I have ever read on IMBD, which is normally over run with ignorant people desperate to broadcast their ignorance. The sad part is, these mostly are probably not 12 year olds but middle aged grown adults! Anyways, keep up the well thought comments/responses! Reading yours, albeit 10 years later, gives me hope that all is not lost and ignorance does not reign supreme. Ironically, some of your comments/insights from 10 years ago are just as relevant if not more so today. Bravo!

I didn't mind it seeming like a play but you are correct, it is preachy but being preachy is lefty bigot Stone's usual approach.

This is actually one of my favorite Oliver Stone movies.

I'm not sure how great a film it might be (can't remember specifically if I've seen it) but conceptually it sounds like a great idea. Didn't realize it was an early O Stone effort. There was always something about it that seemed worth visiting, but for some reason I have not connected with it yet.
