Why is this not on DVD ?

Can anyone explain why this excellent film has never been released on DVD ? There must be thousands, nay millions of films on DVD but not this one. Why ?

It's certainly very strange. I'm not sure that it was even released (at least here in the UK) to buy on VHS - I have an ex-rental copy. I think it's only shown on TV once, so maybe there is some sort of rights problem? (ITC went under soon after the release of the movie.)

Given that people are selling bootlegs and that second-hand copies of the soundtrack go for $70 surely there's a market? I have noticed that the film's poster is (somewhat bizarrely) still available in repro!

It is on DVD, search for "A Summer Story" on Amazon Japan and you will find it, you can switch off the Japanese subtitles if you don't need it.

Anyone know if this is a legitimate studio release or yet another instance of someone trying to sell bootleg VHS to DVD copies?

I know some things are released in foreign markets first - or only - but it doesn't make sense that this movie would only be available in Japan. I can see releasing for UK only and no other regions, but Japan only doesn't make a lot of sense.

I thought it seemed odd, but surely Amazon wouldn't be selling bootlegs?

I'm with you on this one! I'd love this on DVD!

I have a copy taped on VHS from TV many moons ago & it's crappy. Would love to see it on DVD.

Scorpion Releasing are putting this film out on Region 1 DVD on August 12th. They just announced this on their Facebook page.

It's currently about a dollar cheaper on Amazon.
