Synopsis, Please!

I believe this is the movie I saw on TV many years ago that haunted me, about a summer romance between a country girl and a visiting city boy, which ended tragically? Please, one of you who loves this story so much, submit a synopsis or outline. I don't know why the category is missing for this listing.

Well, I'm not sure how to submit an official synopsis on IMBD. But I will say, this is probably the little gem of a film you saw years ago. It has that effect on people.

Two young men are visiting the English countryside, taking a break from their busy lives. When one of the men accidently injures his ankle, a nearby woman is beckoned to help. She is young and beautiful and the two men are instantly intrigued. The injured man and his companion are taken to the girl's family farm to heal and soon become boarders of her Aunt. From this point on the film really takes off and there is no emotion left out - love, yearning, jealousy, regret, etc. The distinction of classes is always brewing and it's more apparent as the film progresses. Put all of this together with beautiful cinematography, an amazing score, and actors that bring out every side to their characters.

I was in high school when I saw this and have never fogotten it. It does not exist at local video stores, etc. because it was a little seen film that came and went. It really is a word of mouth gem that is bid on e-Bay when a rare copy is put up for sale. I purchased mine a few years ago and feel it was worth it.

Anyway, to add to the synopsis without spoiling it for IMDBers who have yet to see the movie:
At summer's end, Ashton is offered a choice. One option is presented to him as a piece of predestination. To him, it looks inevitable. He succumbs -- with a certain relief --- to what he wants to believe is Fate sweeping him away. Twenty years later we see how things have turned out for a man whose fatal flaw is his passivity. That's the tragedy of this story, and also its warning. Are things predestined for us? Should we surrender ourselves to what appears to be our Destiny? Or does stuff just happen and it's up to our own valiant will, good sense and self-knowledge to decide what's best and make it come good? Then again, will we come a cropper if we follow our heart? These days, with so many people drivelling on about "soul mates" and "destiny" and "it's all pre-ordained", this movie hits the metaphysical nail even more soundly on the head than it did 18 years ago.
I have seen this pic only once, at the cinema in 1988, but have never forgotten it. Imogen Stubbs is enchanting and James Wilby gives such an awesome performance; he is restrained yet conveys so much torment and confusion with the most fleeting of facial expressions. He is definitely underrated and Brit filmmakers, not to mention the BBC costume-drama makers, would do well to check out Wilby before reaching for the usual Colin Firth or whoever.

So what are you saying groovergreen? Are things our destiny or should we just go with the flow of life?

I saw this film years ago, and it has always haunted me. The other two posters gave pretty good overviews, but just a minor correction - if memory serves me, they are supposed to be two Englishmen in Wales' countryside. The girl is Welsh. That was another clash of differences. I could be wrong about that, but that's what I remember.
