Question for the British: Does anyone really have America week?!?!

This is one of the main plots of this film. At first I thought it was just to be absurdist like David Lynch or something like that, what with huge photos of President Reagan and marching bands in a street parade with huge crowds for no known event, but it carries on and takes itself so seriously and literally that I think they really mean it.

Does anyone in England or anywhere in continental Europe know if any places actually have an America week? It seems counterintuitive and a better special event would be a "no-America week".

BTW, the Jazz bands playing in this "parade" are exquisite. I've seen a million and one movies and TV shows try to do New Orleans French Quarter Jazz bands to set a tone, and this one is far and away the best---while merely portraying England!!!

I'm not aware of any specific American Week celebrated here in the UK, although our popular culture is heavily influenced by the US in terms of music, film, youth identity etc. This cross-identity with a shared language, history, political-democratic system underwrites both an allied sense identity with and animosity towards the US; you guys get judged on US foreign policy and perceived ignorance and self-centred arrogance suggested by the Hollywood machine. I've spent time in the US and know this to be either a harsh or misleadingly unkind perception, a result of the media generally rather than any direct experience. A number of pubs etc. have cashed in, rather cynically, on the 4th July celebrations, promoting this to sell more beer using the Stars and Stripes as advertising material. We do - and here I'm speaking as a Londoner - celebrate several cosmopolitan cultures represented by London's and Britain's multi-cultural diversity; St. Patrick's is very big now (which had always had pro- and con- political overtones because of The Troubles which has now enjoyed a successful ceasefire); the Asian community have several religious festivals throughout the year that are all-inclusive; the Chinese New Year is very popular in some city centres; we even have a Russian winter festival in Trafalgar Square which has been happening now for a few years.

Wow, thanks for the nice reply.

I'm still wondering if the writers were spoofing or actually thinking this was a real event or could have been a real event.

believe me when I say...many Americans would relish a "no-america" event. No american aid, no lame american foreign service workers wasting resources, no american troops dying for other countries...I am all for "no-american" events.
