A 6 or 7. Anything Lower Is Unfair.

I just watched Stormy Monday, and I thought it was pretty good. I was expecting Sting to be awful, but he was just as good as Tommy Lee Jones. Who doesn't expect Melanie to perform badly? Yet she did well in this film (and I can't stand her!). The pacing of events in this movie seem to be something that most viewers cannot get into, and that's such a shame. I thought it was perfect the way it built up to the end. While the ending could have been a little more drawn out and meaningful with more character development (we never really got to know Andrej -- the guy that was blown up), that's not a major issue with me.

Notable strengths:

1. Lighting and cinematography. Look how awesome all the lights look in the darkness. The bridge scene near the end was nice.
2. Sting and Tommy Lee were superb in such an average film. Melanie and Sean held their own.
3. Nice pacing of the plot -- even if most people disagree.
4. The music.

Notable weaknesses:

1. The segment of the film where Brendan talks to Kate, then meets with Finney, and then goes back to talk to her some more should've been much shorter; mainly the Kate/Brendan conversation(s).

2. The scene where Kate and Brendan are having sex while the band marches on the street below is awful. Bad editing, and the loud music/silence formula does not work well here. Possibly the weakest scene in the movie.

3. The end where Andrej gets blown up and Brendan gets emotional was weak. How well did Brendan even know Andrej? Furthermore, how well did the viewers of the film know Andrej? See what I'm saying?

It would be generous to give this movie anything higher than a 7. However, giving it a 4 or 5 is a bit unfair. If you think this movie is THAT bad, you've never seen any truly awful films.

I liked this movie for many more reasons than listed, and some of the weaknesses were not, in my opinion. For example, I had a pretty good idea about Andrej from the Polish club & Brendan's time with the band. So I was emotional too.

I gave it an 8 here. I first saw this movie in it's original release.

This TV is showing it right now. Unfortunately, the movie is panned & scanned and has commercials, so that ruins the cinematography and pacing.

Melanie has one of the 80's spikey female hairdos which I don't really ever find attractive.

It seems potentially good, so if I see it cheap on DVD I might get it so I can see it in original form.
