Was Brendan a little slow witted

A physically handsome man unemployed and taking a job as a janitor? Brendan was a loser. He seemed to need prodding by others to make a move. From his actions, including the ending, Brendan seemed to be a bit slow. I found myself comparing Sean Bean's performance with that of Christopher Eccleston as the tragic Derek Bentley in 'Let Him Have It'. Sorry Sean, but you didn't nail it this time.
