Sean Bean. . . IRA?

I know, I know, wild speculation, but I could've sworn a while ago this board had way more threads and there was this feeling that Sean Bean's backstory was he was an IRA soldier hiding out in Newcastle, hence his already having some money in his pocket and not being too ruffled by the savagery of the criminal underworld/looking out for his sponsor, Sting. Haven't seen the movie in ages and now it's not streaming anymore, but can anyone confirm or deny if this ambiguous point has some justification.

No. His character was clearly upset by the violence in the movie and the only interest he has in the film, next to Melanie, is music. He's just a somewhat naive music nutter.

The only justification I can see is that he was able to shoot one of the thugs from quite a distance in the rain, which would show experience with guns However, I think that was a plot device/suspension of belief.

My guess is he was not.
