Wouldn't they question the boys that confessed originally?

I'm watching the movie now on Hulu and a father of one of the boys said that his son said he didn't do it. So apparently, they couldn't use them as one of them had changed their story.

The character Brad Pitt played changed his story. Shortly afterward all of the suspects got lawyers and that seemed to have ended any questioning of them.
