Why does everyone hate this movie?

I loved it. I thought it was extremely funny. Maybe you have to be from Europe to appreciate it, I don't know.
Anyone else out there who likes this movie?

I really enjoyed this movie too - I'm an Aussie BTW.

I thought Daniel was great in this part - quite a change from his proper English roles e.g. "Room With A View". His character was a real fish out of water. That scene he does in front of the blind woman, not realising she can actually see him, is hilarious. I love movies like this that have different characters, even if they are a bit wacky. Would like to see him do another comedy one day.

Hope it gets a Region 4 DVD release sometime soon.

I am still puzzled by the title "Stars and Bars".
Do you know what it's supposed to mean?

reply

I'm so glad you like this movie!
Yes Daniel was brilliant (as always) and very funny. I'd also love to see him in another comedy some day.

Unfortunately this film hasn't been released on DVD at all, which I can't figure out why since tons of crap movies get DVD releases all the time.

As for the title--I think it's a pun on "stars and stripes"-the US flag nickname. As in he's trapped in the USA and it's like in jail. Or something like that :)

Thanks for the explanation about the title "Stars and Bars". It makes sense when you think about it.

As one of the best actors ever, Daniel's movies all deserve a DVD release. Sometimes I think if a film is not a hit at the box office, it's overlooked for a DVD release in favour of one that is. We get our share of crap movies on DVD too, especially ones that have never got a cinema release. Shall just have to keep checking.

'Stars and Bars' refers to the name of the first official flag of the Confederacy. Since the movie mostly takes place in the South, it is a reference to the Confederatre flag, despite having the modern American flag on the cover art.

i don't hate this movie, i love it. one of my favorite comedies of all time. so goofy yet so thoughtful.

daniel day-lewis was just fantastic in this--so manic and so funny. i wish he'd done more comedies (he was funny in 'a room with a view', too). the entire cast, really-- so many different types of characters and actors, yet they all worked together so beautifully.

i was just over at the 'comfort and joy' boards, and, yes, both these movies need a dvd release soon.

and littleliz08 is right, the title refers to the confederate flag of the civil war south.

Thank you littleliz08 for explaining the title of the movie. Very interesting to someone like me who is not American, and did not choose to take history as an elective subject at school. Something I'm sorry I didn't do now, but there is always the History Channel to watch and learn from.

For the record, Daniel likes it too, and 'thought it was very funny', as he told me himself in an interview about 15 years ago. He sort of seem puzzled as to why it didn't register, but didnt seem to concerned about it either
