Did anyone else see this when it was released?

What was the audience reaction at the end? I feel compelled to repost one of my old messages regarding the most unearthly reaction to a film that I've ever heard in my life, before or since. At the final scene there was this eerie wail of despair that came from the audience, this was in the days before the internet spoiled everything beforehand. All these years later I still remember that awful sound, I don't ever want to hear that again.
