Where to get this masterpiece?

Jep.

There is a copyright dilemma which has prevented the film to be released on DVD.
I think Hobert owns most of the rights, but SVT (Swedish Television) also has some rights and a deal must be settled. That is what I heard.

We need to make some calls

Good you show interest here, Bela. I wonder, maybe there is a political reason for not releasing it? Can't be economical, because the film has already acquired cult status since long time ago. Every person I know who has seen it, says it's extraordinary. It also won prizes at several film festivals back in 1988. It is quite extreme: You make a film that wins prizes and gets cult status, the market asks for the film, but you don't release it. Maybe politics. Or maybe some high-positioned jerk dislikes the director and makes sure it will not be released.

Still searching I hope :D

Luminous Film and Video Wurks AKA Fred Frey has a legitimate looking webstore claiming they have this title for sale. Actually, they do but once you've purchased this from them you will not receive it. They are a rip-off. If you don't mind bootlegs ( I just want a good story, sorry) check out Ioffer, Videoscreams, allcluesnosolutions, or atlasdvd. These are trustworthy sites. P.S. also stay way out of the way of 5minutestolive/cinestrike/Sam McAbee. Good luck out there!

reply

Unfortunately it's not available on dvd so you'd either need to find a torrent or hunt e-bay for an old vhs and I doubt if it would have English subs. Shame as it's a true lost gem.

"Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!"

reply

Hey Corpus

Thanks for the heads up on this one - found a torrent. :)

The poster formerly known as kissmiasma.

No problem, hope you like it. It wouldn't be for everyone but I found it quite effective. I'd be interested in your thoughts on it sometime, if that's okay.

"Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!"

reply

Sure.

I'll get back to you once I've watched it.

reply

Heya!

Took a while, but finally got to watch this. Wow.

I love discovering films like this - with no idea what to expect you end up seeing something unlike anything you've seen before.

Will wait to hear back from you.

reply

Heh, I take it you liked it?
It really was a good'un, wasn't it? I felt exactly the same way as you did, not knowing what to expect and indeed, I had kinda lowered expectations actually but I felt it was a very effective gem of a film, definitely. And that ending was a killer.

"Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!"

reply

Liked it? Oh yeah.

That ending - how can brilliant sunshine be so chilling?? (The future's so bright .... )

No gimmick - no crater or cave for the players to stupidly stumble off to explore. No alien artifacts. No green or orange glow behind a plastic grid or in a briefcase to 'titillate' the audience - just story and character development ... nothing spelled out or beaten to death. Niiice.

I got a real jolt when he plugged in the videotape that showed the original survivor from the beginning. Very creepy. For some reason, I kept thinking of 'Winter Sleepers' while watching this - part of it was, I suppose, the European winter scenes, but I think it was also just recognizing that both are at the heart just a story-based film that counts on the viewer being capable of following and deciphering for themselves what they see.

Definitely one that sticks with you for a long time.

reply

Yeah and I also wasn't expecting the third act to go quite the way it went, focusing on the aftermath of him with his family and it's another thing I found effective about it as it added a nice air of unpredictability to it. I think that ending actually ranks among one of the best, it just lingers with you long after you've seen it.

"Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!"

reply

'Lingers' - that's exactly the right word.

reply

I'm just glad you liked it, I'd really like more people to see this one, it truly deserves a wider recognition.

"Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!"

reply

"it truly deserves a wider recognition"

Agreed.

I read what I could about it while waiting for the torrent - cannot believe that it's never had another public showing after the original broadcast IIRC - so good to know that the title is still passed on by word of mouth and that there is still an audience interested in seeing it and spreading the word.

What a shame that it's never been released properly, although the mystery and unavailability of it DO rather feed the notion that there is a deeper, darker reason for it never being put on DVD. As another poster posited, maybe it is political. Big brother. Failed government experiments and all ...

Thanks again for the info that helped me to find it - really glad to have seen this one and I'll be watching it again in the next few weeks I think.

It's these little gems I'm looking for lately - the more obscure, the harder to find - the better. (I even got a copy of Rabies (Kalevet) - or did I already tell you that? Thanks for that one too) If you've got any more titles like this to pass on, I'm all ears (as it were).

reply

Yeah, it covers some topics that are certainly relevant today and to me is one of the more ageless horrors, with none of the 80s stamp on it. As for other films, (and another ageless one btw) have you seen the Austrian horror Angst (1983) yet? That's another gem, one of the best horrors of the 80s and one of the best serial killer films ever. It's critically great and sadly unavailable on dvd. It apparently was an influence on Irreversible. Great film anyway and again, the only way to watch it with subs is to dl it but excellent film, definitely.
Glad you finally got to see Rabies, I liked it overall and found it nicely quirky, if somewhat mis-marketed. Still a solid enough flick overall with some nice eye candy too.

"Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!"

reply

Angst - cool. Thanks Corpus, I'll check it out.

Agreed about Rabies - made me think of Severance and Dead Snow.

reply

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Angst, definitely, it's just a masterpiece for me.

"Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!"

reply

Sure.

It may take me a while - hectic time right now, but I will definitely get back to you.

reply

I hear ya, I've been pretty busy myself the past two weeks. But I reckon you'll at least appreciate Angst. Not your usual run of the mill horror but just an excellent film.

"Hey, look at that! She's not crazy, she's being chased by a cheetah!"

This movie is available on the torrent site Cinemageddon and has fan made English subtitles. It's a TV rip on VHS tape but looks pretty good.
