Why the low score? :(

I guess its probably just one of those films where you either love it or you hate it?

I'd say most folks are pretty neutral on this film rather than loving it or hating it. The majority of voters gave this a 5 or a 6; I chose the former. It's not a bad film, and the first "Short Circuit" wasn't that great, but this one is missing the appeal of Ally Sheedy and Steve Guttenberg. At least it has Johnny.

Just seen SC 1&2 for the first time in years and really liked them.
I gave them both a 6 out of 10.

I don't know, but I can list a few reasons that made me not like the movie too much.

- The atmosphere is 'harsher' - it's not as inspiring, exciting, sweet and lovely as the first movie. Instead of beautiful countryside or nice place like Oregon, we're in a noisy, chaotic metropolis with not much nature. Mid-eighties vs. late eighties - the latter will always lose in atmosphere.

- The whole point of view changed from 'what is life' and 'respecting life and nature' to 'teenage gangsta thugs have violent fight against robot'. From a deep and beautiful philosophical pondering sprinkled with comedy, one-liners and wacky fun humor, to a mundane, violent, more serious tone.

- Trying to preach instead of provoking thought and insight - you should blah blah and don't be a racist or violent blahblah ugly duckling drama blah

- Drama instead of comedy

- Shocking violence and pain instead of brighter storyline with hope and fun

- The ending is too sugary sweet and perfect contrasted to what just happened earlier

- Lots of boring filler

- Uninteresting and unrealistic 'injected romance' that wastes the viewer's time SO MUCH

- Destroying the original characters, their names, identities and backstory

- A lot of the movie happens in a boring factory instead of picturesque Oregon and beautiful nature sceneries

- The pacing is all over the place

- It's not poignant, like the first one - it doesn't offer the adult almost anything, and it's too violent and scary for kids - it falls between the cracks and doesn't really fit anyone

- Johnny 5 wanting revenge is not a good plot, in the first one, he just wanted to live without being shot at

- The whole clichéic 'bank robbery' crap is just so typical and lazy trope, how many times do we need to see 'bank robbers are bad'? Are those private bank owners SO scared that someone's going to rob them, they have to include this trope in every darn movie?

- The story just isn't very good

- Besides the bank robbery and Johnny 5 getting violently beaten up, what really happens in this movie? Filler, filler, filler and more filler, Johnny gets a couple of books and gets hassled. That's about it. The first movie explored many themes - who has the right to live, who has the right to kill life, and why, and what makes the distinction important, etc.? What is life? Where do we all come from?

This movie asks 'how to rob bank robbers' and 'if someone looks different, can they be bullied' (how typically preachy and boring).

It's like saying 'racism is bad'. It's groan-inducing, because a) everyone KNOWS that already and b) we've been already told it so many times

Tell me you have not seen this movie's plot many times already, when it comes to injected romance and bank robbery stuff. There has to be a thousand of 'romantic comedies' out there that have the same kind of scenarios and there has to be a thousand bank robbery movies that are more imaginative than this movie's bank robbery stuff.

Why is people robbing a bank seen as the worst crime ever in movies, but banks robbing people is seen as a good thing?

More fun than the original.

I love this film. I think this is much better than the first and deserves a higher rating. Maybe around the 6 or lower 7 mark. It's definitely not a masterpiece, but just a good time flick to watch with your friends and family. The story was deeper, Johnny and Ben had more character development and it was overall a better film.

It's one of the rare occasions where the sequel is superior, it shouldn't be rated a whole point below the original.

It also kind of surprised me when I came here and saw it, but I don't think people hate it, they more likely just list it among their childhood movies which they don't remember as bad but which probably weren't that great either. Anyway, I rated it according to my childhood memory (I saw it only twice when I was 9 and 10, which is almost 20 years ago, omg) and the impact it had on me, which sums it up to clean 10 stars, because this is by all means one of the most poignant movies I've ever seen from the scene where they destroy Johnny up until the very end. When I was a child (which is its target group anyway), it hit me right in the feels and shaped my imagination and sense of drama in a very important way. So, no matter what, I will always consider it my little personal masterpiece :D

I gave it an 8. I felt it covered a lot of ground in 110 minutes and unlike in SC1, Johnny actually got to go out into the world and have some fun this time without being constantly shot down by some antagonist. In SC1, NOVA was constantly on Johnny 5's ass so we never really got to see him have any fun out in the real world which always kind of annoyed me. The music is also very good in SC2, although I was hoping to hear "Who's Johnny" again at some point! Two thumbs up!
