Why did they change Ben's back story

In the first one he said he was from Bakersfield and his "ancestors" are from Pennsylvania.
Then in part two he say's he is studying to become a citizen and the reason why he came to this country is because of the opportunity.

I never realized they changed it when I was younger, but now being older I feel they kinda missed a huge comedic opportunity of explaining why he has that goofy/racist accent.

I think the writers were trying to make him more of a serious character being that he is now the lead, who happens to be funny rather than having him be the silly comic sidekick like in the first one.

They also changed his last name from Jabituya to Javari to also show this.

He was joking when he said he was from Bakersfield.
