Do you cry?

I am a 31 year old heterosexual male, and I literally break into tears every time I see the scene of Johnny getting smashed up. I'm not ashamed to admit it either. I loved this robot when I was a kid, I still love him now. Does anyone else cry at that? Some guy over in another thread said he laughs at it. Who's with me?

I tear up when he gets beaten, i can't stand that scene without shedding some tears, it's extremely unnerving how real the 'pain' seems that #5 feels.

"Seems that he feels"? Johnny 5 has sensors as you may recall when Stephanie kissed him on one in the original movie and he reacted to it. Keep in mind that he is electrical, and so are humans at the very core-- oh sure, we conduct electrical charges through biological means, but a shot to Johnny's system can cause an overload or short circuit (no pun intended) and instantly cause him to react to it, just like we would.

He can feel pain, just on a different plane of reality.

Yes, I know it's a movie.

Yeah, I'm a 35 year old hetero male. I'm in the marine corps. I watched that scene again the other day, I got so upset that I shat my pants and screamed until I passed out.

No kidding.

I had a lump in my throat that's for sure. Some of the younger kids in the room were so disturbed that they had tears streaming down their face and once Johnny 5 came back for revenge, the kids started to become violent, shouting stuff at the TV like, "Kill Them!!!!!". Never has a film had that much of an adverse effect on children.

I watched this film with my little 7 year old sister today to she if liked it.
I start tearing up when that piano melody first comes in. Every time!

I used to cry when watching this as a kid. Now, as a 21 year old hererosexual* male, I wasn't as moved by the scene as much as I had hoped. I did however find the movie as a whole to be a pleasant revisit. Some childhood movies turn out to be not-so-good when you revisit them as an adult, but this was not the case with Short Circuit 2.

*Why are we including this word? Are we thus implying that gay people are less resistant to crying when it comes to watching movies? :P

No, it's because there's always that one idiot that doesn't know anything about anything that will laugh at a man who cries and say "You must be gay if you cry at a movie" So, I felt the need to defend my sexuality prematurely.

I'm about as straight as you can get. I am 18 and I started to tear up when Johnny was getting smashed up. I also gasped in shock when the red battery fluid splattered up onto the one guy. I thought "Oh my gosh, he's bleeding! He really IS alive!".

I completely agree with the poster who mentioned the 'Rage' that kids can get into.
I remember when I was really small, I used to get really emotional and almost sobbing uncontrollably when Johnny get's smashed up. My Mum was always like "Turn it off" to my Dad, and He was like "No, coz he loves the next bit".

I think my Dad understood the fact that you need the 'Sad' scene to fully appreciate the end Chase, That way kids can really empathise and get behind Johnny. It's like Kill Bill for Kids.

Yeah, I know what you mean. He's only 70% functional, with a battery that is leaking, but he is determined to stop Oscar and the others, regardless of the cost to himself. That is determination.

EXACTLY!! I'm always crying by the time he gets beat up and even more when the piano starts and when he is in the alley.

So the SECOND the chase scene song starts ("I need an hero" or something like that), my god am I hyped!! I want him to kill Oscar !! :P

In fact, I guess I just cry non-stop from the beat-up scene all the way to the end of the credits!!

The weirdest thing is, I almost never cry for any humans dying in movies but animals and cute robots (Johnny and Wall-E) always get tears from me... I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean... ;)

Dude! I know! That is an impactful scene. The guy even notices, he can't go on. Johnny is BEGGING for life and pleading with them not to continue. Kind of rough for a movie in reality. It does make us really indentify with him and feel better. It is all the more nobel of Fred to assist in repairs, even while burning himself and using his shirt.

reply

Yeah I cry at that point, that moment is so powerful to me. Amazing.

It's like the Passion of the Christ..no kidding.

reply

If you mean in terms of crying, then yes. I cried from about 10 minutes into Passion until after I left the theater. It's a movie I'm glad I saw, but I never want to see again.
