Observation about James and Wendy's place

When they and the two other couples are all watching TV, it appears that the wall is being redone as there are big holes in it. Or maybe that was the style.

Even if that's the case, the TV they are watching is on top of a random wood plank, which is on top of what looks to be the VCR box or some kind of electronics item on its side!
Why have a wood plank out (on top of that!) at a party for the TV??

Seems out of place.

That would make 3 Christmas' I've saved, vs. 8 that I've ruined; two were kind of a draw..

There are other obvious bits being redone. When Frank first crawls in and barks at the dog, the door behind is partly painted. They are apparently redoing the apartment.

It's the 80s, we can presume they are trendy folks in a gentrified neighborhood. And the photo frame is pretty crazy woodworking (I can't do that) so I guess is supposed to be some scripted and not filmed or edited out background that he is refurbishing the place himself.

Ok Shoo, great points. How about the wood plank and the VCR box with TV on top?

It's the 80s! :)

I lived for years in the 90s in a moderately respectable apartment with that boards-on-stuff (cinderblocks, glass block) thing as a legit way to have shelving. I did it about the time everyone else did as cheap shelving in college, but then we stuck with it. Maybe too long.

I am pretty sure it went so far as cinderblocks being sold in the furniture aisle in stores for a bit there in the early 90s, IIRC.

OMG, just googled and it' still a thing. E.g. https://www.pinterest.com/explore/cinder-block-shelves/
