How are they related? Frank is so loud and strong, whereas his brother is so meek it made me want to throw up. Plus when Frank addresses him via the TV at the end, he rests his head on his girlfriend/wife's shoulder, which makes him look even weaker.

When he is amongst his wife and friends, he is accepted unlike his relationship with his brother Frank. Resting your head on a significant other's shoulder is a sign of affection and love. There is no way after receiving a brand-new VCR in a box that he would hook it up and have a blank tape ready to go - at a Christmas party- in what amounted to less than one hour. A definite throwaway line.
That would make 3 Christmas' I've saved, vs. 8 that I've ruined; two were kind of a draw..

Back then they had pretty much all of the cables and a blank tape to get you going.
He didn't even KNOW he was getting a vcr! So why would he even have all the "cables and blank tape" on the ready?
Plus you say "it was the 80s" ----- honestly, that should be more like it was the 90s when having blank tape was more common since people were recording things much more then.
that technology was still growing in the late 80s.
