Why was the time period of the movie changed?

The movie was well directed. Crispin Glover was exactly how I had imagined Rodion Raskolnikov to be. His amazing performance of the scary and intriguing character was near perfect. The entire movie would have made more sense if it was set in the time period it was meant to be.
