More than just Light Vs. Dark???

This is one of my favorite movies and I don't know if this was spoken upon before, but wasn't it more issues rather than the light vs. dark. Throughout the years what stuck to me wasn't that, it was how it showed blacks going against blacks for attending college, like example the Popeyes/KFC scene when Samuel L. Jackson attacked Dwanye Wanye and crew for being in college ( they never finished their meal, don't judge me) LOL. And also how Dap want to Thrilled about Julian more so of class (feeling one is more high or lower than another because of beliefs) and so on, Maybe it's my own eyes and persecption and what I took from this movie rather than the light vs. dark alone. What all else did you get from it? Also remember "You can only be you and I can only be me"

It was more about weave and makeup and colored contacts vs all natural. Straight vs kinky hair, college vs no college (no college and poverty living) in the black community, and not going into immoral values to be accepted by cliques.

I can agree with that for the most part.

The movie in general is about different perspectives of what it means to be black and conscious.

There are people like Julian, the fraternity and the sorority who are more bougie and into assimilation. Anti-Africa and anti-participation in African struggle or preserving connections to Africa, whether aesthetically or politically.

Then there are the militant, pro-black and the socio-politically conscious group, lead by Dapp. They believe they are defenders are black culture, black social interests, and African roots/values/connections.

And then there are the black townies showcased at KFC. Ironically they see the "conscious" group as white-washed sell-outs just because they go to college and may look down on blacks who can't go to college and are stuck in dead-end jobs with no way to better themselves.

This throws Dapp for a loop because he thought only a "julian" could be a sell-out.

So, Spike created a very interesting juxtaposition of the the different groups and their various benefits, flaws and blind spots. IT's about much more than hair.

Not to mention the conversation the President has with another administrator in the opening of the film:
What is the relevance of HBCUs in our "post-racial" society? & why aren't they funded by alumni dollars to the extent that other affinity colleges are??
