In the credits, almost all the songs are credited to "Jennie Lee and the Mystery"...If you find out anything more, please let me know @ [email protected]

Dunno- major insomnia last night, so i was channel surfing & came across this movie just as the band was covering Elvis Costello's "Mystery Dance"- lame flick, but the music was pretty good. Obviously, Justine was not singing- even the lip synchs are bad. I'll do some research & see if I can find out who did the music- Steve Cropper, Deborah Harry? Couple of pretty decent musicians there...maybe they had something to do with the music.

I read that Justine Bateman sang the music and lip synched to her own voice during the scenes. The bandmates also actually learned how to play their instruments for the sets. Not bad at all!

reply

I used to have the CD, but sold it. I do remember that Justine did the vocals, but I'm not sure about the backing musicians.

reply

They did thier own with coaching help.Britta Philips was the only experienced musician at the time. They did a decent job.And I was lucky to watch some of the filming and they did play the songs. The studio has to rerecord to get better tracking.

reply

Justine did her own singing, which was horrible.

reply

That's what I read also. Justine Bateman is very talented and can do most anything.

reply

Yes, the actors played all the songs, both the live parts seen/heard in the movie & the studio recorded soundtrack album. The live stuff is way better.
But Justine has a great voice, too bad she didn't continue in music.

Kinda freaky though, Julia Roberts the bass player ??
She even gets to whack someone in the head like all good rock bassists.
:^)

It's on dvd now too.

"Justine has a great voice???"

Are you deaf? The girl couldn't hit a note if she fell on it!

I thought the preformance scenes were the best too. The rest of the
movie was silly. I would like to see Brita Phillips in play live with
her band and the drummer actually looked like a really good drummer
during the songs.

reply

The drumming was definitely wrong. Britta was the old skilled musician.

A soundtrack for the movie was released in 1988. Billed as being performed by Justine Bateman & The Mystery, the instruments are actually performed by session players, with Bateman on lead vocals and Britta Phillips on background vocals. The lead vocal on "Mr. Big Stuff" was sung by co-star Britta Phillips. The soundtrack also featured songs by other artists.
