What Happened?

The film ends on a pretty ambiguous note. In the last scene, we see Krishna cry for the first time after he's basically lost everything and everyone he cared about in some way or another. You almost forget that he's still a child because of the adult way he carries himself throughout, but this last sequence definitely brings one back to the fact. It was extremely moving, I thought.

SPOILERS!

No. He finally makes the 500 rupees, only to have it stolen by his junkie friend who he did everything he could to help. He and Manju then gets taken in by the police but escapes after being scalded by another boy. Manju is placed in state care until she can be adopted, which I'm pretty sure would be a very slim chance. Sweet Sixteen is 'bought' by a wealthy business man, and refuses to run away with him because she naively believes Baba will rescue her. He stabs Baba for basically being a prick and runs away with Manju's mother, but they lose each other. The film ends with Krishna crying about his lack of money, prospects, and anyone to turn to, and presumably wanted for murder/attempted murder (Baba's fate isn't revealed).

Thanks Acemcgaffrey!

The last scene depicts the feelings of Krishna where he realizes that his fate is stuck in Bombay and that this has become his life after all the efforts by him to go back home prove futile. He is seen sitting quietly moaning the realization that this is where he belongs now.
