After Salaam Bombay, he tried to get into acting but because of his background, he was rejected. He managed to get into a few films but none were as good to he called it quits for acting and is now married with two children and works as a cameraman. Watch the extra features on the dvd. It shows what he looks like now and what he does.

It's all about the corned beef sandwiches and pineapple juice

I attended a screening of this film on 4/20/06 in which the director spoke afterwards. The actor is now the co-owner of a rickshaw business. He became a best-best (chief lighting assistant) for Indian TV and films. He later got into some trouble with the law, but has straightened himself out. He is married with two kids. The young man who played "Insect" was adopted by this film's DP and became a boogie-board champion in California. He is married with one child.

I saw the film in my International Cinema class, I absolutelty adored it. But Anyway my prof. told the class that Nair gave the street kids she used in the main roles one wish they'd fuffil (something realistic of course)and he asked to be Re-united with his family. After he came home his parents started to abuse him again so he returned to the streets.

Well, your professor may be right, but I witnessed Ms. Nair tell an audience - of which I was a member - what I posted previously.

Glad to hear that. But the story of Fernando Ramos Da Silva still haunts me. For those who do not know him, he was the kid who played Pixote in the movie "Pixote".
May his soul rest in peace!

Shafiq did return to street life for a while, as some people have said, but later in life he managed to improve his conditions and now runs a business. Life is very tough in this place.

Wow everyone is so miss-informed. He isnt a cameraman, he doesn't run his own business. He is a rickshaw driver. Google his name.
