Were any horses killed??

I heard that 2 horses were killed in the making of the movie. Is there any truth behins that or were they just random rumors?

reply

Rumors If it was true, the ASPC world would be going nuts about it.

We have the RSPCA here in Australia, but they would only intervene if there was cruelty or negligence. I heard there were accidental deaths but there are conflicting stories......

horses die all the time. if a horse happened to colic on a movie set, that wouldnt automatically mean it was killed as a result of involvement with the film, or deliberately killed for a scene.

you really think someone is going to allow their horse to be DELIBERATELY fatally injured, the incident filmed and used flat out for cinema?? yeah, thatll make a family movie thats sure to be fun for all, a snuff flick! *rolls eyes*

reply

The truth is that at least one horse was badly injured during a fall, I think during the iconic ride down the steep mountain slope. After the accident the horse was put to death with the blunt end of a large axe. As a result there was much public outcry during production.

Actually, movie makers allowed horses to be terribly abused and neglected until people started stepping in to try and care for animals in films.

So, yes, there do exist many people who will do the wrong thing unless they are held accountable.

um, you're wrong, see Flicka (2006)

The scene where Jim rides the horse down the mountain was supposed to go off without a hitch, but Jim and the horse rolled down the hill and the horse snapped its neck. remember this was in the eighties before cgi. they couldn't fake that roll like in movies today. the tears that the actor who played Jim was crying were real. true story. i don't know about the second horse.

Sorry buddy, but you are mistaken. You are correct this film is no Heaven's Gate as there was no deliberate mistreatment of horses or any other animals. However, a horse was killed with the blunt side of an axe after a serious injury during shooting. At the time there was outrage in Australia when news of the incident got out. The incident was reported in newspapers and also radio and tv news spots. The publicity marred the film.
