Anyone else find it odd seeing Ahnold play a Russian?

I was like "woah!" when i first saw this film (last night coincidentally), but i think he managed to pull it off...

reply

Not too much. He's from Austria, which is close to Russia. I'm not sure, but maybe they even have a similar language.

reply

I find it very odd for Arnold to play a russian.

Austria close to Russia? Not even. Austrians speak german which doesn't sound anywhere near russian.

reply

Austria bordered the Soviet Union

But indeed it doesn't sound like Russian or any Slavic language since they speak German in Austria.

reply

"Austria bordered the Soviet Union".

It did not.

Semantics. It was a Soviet Puppet State. Moscow called the shots in Hungary. Not Budapest during the cold war. They made that very clear in 1956

reply

Not sure something that is factually plain wrong, can be brushed off as mere "semantics". And, either way, I don't get what difference does it make whether or not Austria bordered USSR - or Hungary, for that matter.

Russian and German are very different languages.

reply

To me he seemed like the perfect Russian :)

ATripple: Russian and German - which they speak in Austria - are two COMPLETELY different languages, and they are two completely different countries.

reply

So Arnold portrayed a Russian, big deal. If this were meant to be true to form, it would not have come from Hollywood.

Life-the most fatal disease. :P

reply

The Russian was terrible from all but the dead partner, and the 2 guys from washington.
Lines which translate to kiss me in the ass just don't make much sense. Ths movie's not in russian, it's in hollywood russian.

reply

Agreed with sum-1, Arnie's russian was terrible, but it was so much fun for me (Im Russian).. But, uh, those 2 guys from washington... Only one is Russian (Savely Kramarov) and of course he speaks good coz it is his native language, but his partner is awful.. and sounds funny too:)

No, Kiss my ass line was GREAT!! POCELUI MENYA V ZHOPU! sounds with so much anger:)) VERY FUNNY!:))

reply

Not nearly as strange as Sean Connery playing a Lithuanian . . . or a Greek . . . or an Egyptian . . . an Irish American . . .

Nero.

reply

Yep better than Sean Connery's attempt LOL

reply

I always find it odd when a caucasian actor plays a non-caucausian character. Or when an American/British/Australian actor plays a non-English speaking character.

reply

I agree wuth Toallitas. Ahn-Uhld is miscast but... it is only an Arnie action film so I don't think you should care that much!

Reminds me of when Tcheky Karyo played a Russian in Goldeneye. His soft French accent was very different from a Russian accent.
