Rambo III - The book

I'm currently reading "Rambo III" - the book. Never read it before, but I'm really enjoying it. I can already tell that it's going to help me appreciate the film a lot more, which I'll rewatch soon. I'm also getting an interest in The Soviet War in Afghanistan, which I'd love to research.

I've always liked Rambo III because I enjoy realism in films, and I like that the film was set in a realistic context. It's cool seeing the Rambo character placed amongst that, and now that I'm actually learning the history behind the topic, I've become an even bigger fan.

I've been reading it that past week, am about finished with it, and I came on here to say, if you've seen this movie, and you read this book......you're going to be in for a surprise because the book's story is almost completely different from the movie entirely. And between the two I really think the book's the better one.

On his site Morrell says that he based the book on an early draft of the screenplay -- apparently Rambo III, in his words, was going to have more of a "Rambo of Arabia" feel, with a pretty French doctor Rambo befriends and a more epic scope. But as production went on, various factors resulted in the film we now have, which was more action-heavy.
