Rambo 3 dedicated to the taliban!

Before the credits roll we see this little pearl!

This film is dedicated to "the gallant people of Afghanistan"

Meaning the Mujahadin with whom he fought with in the film against the Russians.

Now the Mujahadin has primarily morphed into the Taliban and is armed with the Stingers the Americans supplied , I know its not Earth Shattering but it's interesting how perceptions change!

As a post-script, many people have made sarcastic comments about Rambo fighting alongside the Taliban, or the people who would later go on to become the Taliban. This is not right. In the movie he is heading for the Panjshir, meaning he was hanging out with Shura-yi Nazar, who fought the Taliban quite hard.

And there are no Stingers in Afghanistan (all were used or bought-off by the CIA in the 1990s). Learn more.

reply

True, perhaps, and for what purpose, I'm not sure, but the fact is that the US presence in Afganistan insured the rise of Bin Laden and Al Queada.

That much is fact.

So, Go! Rocky!

reply

There was no US presence in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

There was rumoured British (SAS teams) though.

reply

OK, will refrain from quoting bibliography, but do watch Charlie Wilson's war

reply

Yeah, like they say in the movie - America simply abandoned Afghanistan after 1989 (while Pakistan didn't, so you have the Taliban since 1994).

reply

The only problem I had with the scene about the Mujahideen was that they didn't even try showing what Afghanistan truly looks like. Afghanistan is not some dusty desert with mountains full of caves.

Rambo 3. Set in Afghanistan (a pretty hardcore Muslim country), ironically filmed in Israel.

It's just Hollywood making heroes out of guys that are the US's flavour of the month. Back then Afghans were fighting Russians (who weren't best friends with the US) so Afghans were portrayed as gallant. Now that the tables have turned, hollywood makes them all look like criminals.

Mujahadeen was the collective name of Afghan resistance fighters. I disagree with the previous guy's comment that Rambo is supposedly fighting alongside shura-yi-nayar or whatever. Although it mentions them going through Panshir Valley (I think it was just a case of the filmmakers choosing a place at random from a map), the Afghans in the movie all speak pashto. They also mention they are near Laghman, which is in Eastern Afghanistan.

reply

To use an math express Afghan Mujahadin \notequal Taliban.

I'm a Conservative, and thats my opinion on this matter.

reply

O come on!

Everyone knows that we trained and financed the resistance to the Soviet takeover of Afghanistan.

Once the Soviets moved out, we said 'bye-bye' instead of helping people rebuild their country.

Some of those freedom-fighters didn't like the US before and favored theocracies, but the US was useful for a time. Then we abandoned the country, providing no support in establishing a democratic nation, assuming the winners would remember what good buddies we had been.

It's happened again and again, Iran, Iraq, Panama, etc. As long as a dictator is on our side, he's our boy, until he grows up. Remember Oedipus? We reap what we sow. Admittedly, in one case we reaped more than had sewn.

reply

Nation-building isn't so popular today.

Here are some fun facts.

-Most of the taliban are simply too young to part of any afghan mujahideen.
-The mujahideen were fighting against taliban before US showed up.
-The organized and effective leader of mujahideen was leading against.
And final fun fact is
-The above mentioned leader along with many other mujahideen who fought against taliban, joined forces with taliban to stop the invader (US).

man so many fun facts :)

I don't know if the Taliban is exactly right, but the Mujahedeen definitely spawned Al-Qaeda and other radical Islamic groups. Rambo and bin Laden were definitely on the same side and they Mujahedeen were considered US allies.

reply

its a good thing i know nothing about the wars or id be furious

reply

Hmmmm isn't John Rambo an entirely fictional creation for a movie ?

LOL

reply

IDK anyway I want to see Rambo V where he goes back to Afgan to kick terrorists butts. Its funny the way the word changes, Russia is no longer the enemy.
Its the evil terrorists now a days.

reply

And tomorrow it will be someone else (too bad Gaddafi is dead, Syria has no oil, perhaps Nigeria??). Iran is still too "tight" with the Russians so no, that won't happen yet.

Damn, we're running out of military superpowers to attack, with Afghanistan, Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Korea and Vietnam gone.

Cute and cuddly boyz!!

In the revolutionary war we fought against Britan. In WWI we fought againtsGermany, Italy and Russia. In WWII we fought against Russia ,Germany and Japan. These days Germany, Britan and Japan are our allies. Alliances shift all of the time. At the time of this movie thoes "freedom fighters" were our allies. Now they are our enimies. It doesn't change what they were at the time. It doesn'tmake Rambo(fictional charcter that he is) a bad person for aiding a (then) ally.

What's so crazy about standing toe to toe with someone saying "I am"?

reply

Sorry man, but we Italians were on your side in WW1. In WW2 you didn't fight Russia but Germany, Japan and Italy (or the Fascist Italian Regime, which was opposed by the local partisans who were backed by both US and British military).

reply

Fate and time conspire to deal funny hands periodically.

reply

We still need to keep an eye on those commies, also China, North Korea, and maybe even Saudi Arabia.
