IMDB rating changed from 3.9 to 5.3

The IMDB rating has changed from 3.9/10 in 2003 to 5.3/10 in 2012. Seriously, what's going on here? In our current political climate, I certainly wouldn't have expected the rating of a movie like this to go up. Quite the opposite really.

I have never seen the rating on any film on IMDB climb as highly as this one. Has it developed some kind of a cult following that it didn't used to have?

Rambo 4 came out, causing a surge of people seeing and voting up this movie.

Interesting! I'd never realised it had got so low.

Despite the budget being way too high, it still was a pretty popular film at the time and I wouldn't have expected it to stay at 3.9 forever.

A perfect example of a well-produced over the top eighties actioner.

It's an entertaining once you don't take it too serious. I think that was the problem back 10 years ago: Everything was serious, had to be serious, had to be dramatic and mindful. 80's movies were at an all-time low back then in terms of popularity (while people celebrated retarded cgi *beep* like Matrix)

Times changed, i guess more people learned just to enjoy a movie that may be dumb, full of stereotypes and not "Godfather". Nobody will say that Rambo 3 is a great movie, it's entertaining though, cheesy and once you watch it with a few friends and some whiskey, it's awesome (especially if you have a good surround audio system ;) )
Of course the crowd that suffers from the political correct-virus hate such films but i think and hope that the majority of humans is still sane and can differ between fiction and reality.

Another small reason may be that more and more people from third world or under-developed countries have online success. Action movies like this were and are always really popular in such countries.
