How my opinion changed.

I first saw this movie around 15 years ago. I've always been a fan of stand up so I loved the film and its concept. I thought Tom Hanks performance was great and Sally Fields a bit weak but believable.

Having seen the film recently, I was surprised by how my perception of the film has changed. Sally Fields performance seems so forced I truly believe she was mis-cast. There is nothing funny about her routines at all. It's like you're watching your most non-funny friend tell a joke. It's actually painful to watch.

I will tell you however that I got a deeper appreciation for Tom Hanks performance. His is actually quite a sad and pathetic character. Outside of his routines he is actually quite a downer of a person. Non-likable in every way.

Lastly, the other comedians were just dreadful, probably so that they didn't outshine the star characters.

This film doesn't hold up well at all over the years. Just watch 'Just For Laughs' comedy festival where even the most unfunny comedians are way better than anyone in punchline.

I'm sorry you didn't find them funny, :-(....if you wanna see a real comedian at work watch The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on CBS, he is on everynight after David Letterman:
