I agree that at first glance there is some similarity, but when you get down to the fine detail the creatures are quite different.
As to why the creature is called Pumpkinhead....In the film the Witch "Haggis" refers to the creature as "Vengeance" which would be a more accurate name as the creature is a demonic entity that can be summoned to take revenge for the summoner whom was wronged. At one point the film's title was going to be "Vengeance: The Demon".
It is stated in the film that the rural folk of Bradely Mountain have come to call this demon "Pumpkinhead" because it comes from an old graveyard that has been overrun with pumpkins.

I'm not sure how well you looked into this film before you posted, but it is nothing like Aliens or Alien Resurrection. It's more of a rural folklore tale.

I'm assuming you're referring to the "Newborn Alien". Other than the long slender limbs, I don't think there is very much resemblance and seeing as how Pumpkinhead came out long before Alien Resurrection it would be the Newborn that looks like Pumpkinhead.

I disagree, but as a huge Pumpkinhead fan I'll admit that I'm biased. Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but perhaps you should watch the film first before judging it unfavorably. It really is a nice Horror film with a great performance from Lance Henriksen as well as a great creature.

I think the townspeople started naming the creature after that old poem that was mentioned a few times in the movie. Plus, as another poster already pointed out, it was buried in a pumpkin patch inside a cemetery.
