Worth seeing?

I am a fan of both Kiefer Sutherland and Meg Ryan. Is this movie worth the $5 at Blockbuster or should I not even bother?

Jack Bauer was never addicted to heroin. Heroin was addicted to Jack Bauer.

reply

Absolutely. Clearly underrated, and by far better than e.g. the clearly overrated Say Anything ... (1989).

Okay, Thanks!

Tell me what you think about it once you have seen it!

reply

I vote no. You'll never get that time back.

No, it isn't worth $5. Get Netflix and watch online. You can see all the crummy movies you want and it won't cost you much.

I found it to be one of the most depressing movies I've ever seen; I wouldn't see it again unless I got paid a lot of money first.

However, the soundtrack was wonderful, if one likes instrumental. This was the first movie I ever saw that inspired me to want to go out & buy the soundtrack and hope I forgot the movie entirely. It's absolutely non-pop, mostly instrumental, and somewhat impossible for a musical ignoramus like me to describe or even classify as to genre (allmusic puts it into 'easy listening' & 'jazz,' but EL makes me think of elevator music & jazz of wailing sax. Neither applies here). I hope I won't get in trouble by borrowing a description by Jason Ankeny from allmusic's site; (http://www.allmusic.com/album/promised-land-original-score-mw0000651877 if it makes it into this reply):
"one of the few scores of the late '80s not shackled to the sound and sensibilities of its moment in time. With the great David Grisman contributing mandolin to several tracks, the music boasts a folksy, rural beauty that's undeniably fetching. Even the synthesizer elements possess a homespun charm that adds to the music's dreaminess."
The CD makes a wonderful accompaniment to a nice dinner, background to conversation, studying, just about any time that would benefit from excellent sorta mellow music.

Depressing indeed. The ending is gyp

I'm sorry for you, necros299, but take heart...after enough time has passed the entire movie will fade from your mind --at least it did from mine. I don't recall the ending at all, hallelujah, and please don't remind me ;-). I only remember the soundtrack because I got the CD.

reply

I agree the soundtrack is exquisite. The film had a strong cast and a pretty decent director but I guess it wasn't enough, I only watched it because of Sutherland.

I was glad to see the comments about the soundtrack. This is the first movie that I noticed the name "James Newton Howard". I too bought the soundtrack, and used the music as a soundtrack to some home movies that had been transferred from film to video tape, and it made the silent films a very emotionally journey to watch. James Newton Howard has gone on to great fame, and this was near the beginning of his career.
