connection between Senator, hancock, and mary (spoilers)

I feel like the film set up this interesting connection between Sutherland and Pollan's character along with Gedricks, but then the film totally dismisses it throughout the rest of the film. I lossed hope for the movie when senator gets shot and we dont know what happens to bev (meg ryan).the beginning of the film had meinto it and then I was completely thrown off by ryans character and their relationship that takes up the majority of the film along with hancock and mary.
I was sitting through the film to see senator meet up with mary at some point. I don't know why I justthought that there would be more to it then what movie presented. I think its sucks that ended with kiefer dying, mary and hancock are together at the films close, and its like wtf, you killed senator and mary doesnt really agknowledge it.
I don't know I just feel that the film is missing a great deal of character devolpment and plot, due to its good cast, it had the potential to be something more memorable.

The film IS missing a great deal of character development and plot (and for that matter focus and point) and that's its fatal flaw (the writing), however, due to its good cast and GREAT direction and score and a generally interesting idea it had the potential to be something more memorable and is still worth seeing, especially for the 80's or Kiefer/Ryan aficionados.
