Question! *SPOILERS*

I cannot figure out why Viggo Mortensen's character was physically the same looking as the 'spirit/ghost' person?
They were'nt actually the same person literally in the film, they just looked identical.
What was the purpose of this???

Explanations would be Much Appreciated, TY in advance.

Surrendering to reality is a tranquil suicide

It wasn't deliberate, although Viggos character reminded the warden of Charles Forsyth which is why he was so edgy in his company.

There could have been more of a back story with Charles but Prison stands head and shoulders above many late 80s horror films.

Believe me, I would LOVE knowing the reason why too! That is actually PRECISELY why I am here at the message board for this film

Another post here explained that in the original script it possibly brought out that Viggo is the son of the killed man. It would have REALLY added a lot of depth to the film I think, if they could have filled that in a little as to whether he knew about his father or why exactly he was there...

His behaviour there though I think showed pretty clearly that he was NOT the actual guy who was killed. He was showing far too much kindness to the other inmates for that.

I have over 4000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!

Viggo Mortensen's character is the son of the electric chair victim at the beginning. There are subtle hints throughout the movie.

I thought they would pull a wraith, you know the movie with the car, on us, and he would be a reincarnation of the killer. But given the context of the film, and the ghost trying to kill him, that was ruled out. But clearly he had to have had some connection, and the son thing makes sense.
