Officer Club Dance scene

Outside of the ridiculous bar fight scene (let's just show how tough Connery is in this film), the other scene that seems really out of place was at the officer's club. It just sort of appeared in the film. Things seemed to be going pretty good for the couple and then all of sudden we see Meg Ryan dancing with an officer and Harmon punches him in the junk. What gives with this scene? Did Ryan's character even allude to meeting Harmon at the club?
