At last, I've found it!

I remember watching this late one night on probably BBC1 or 2 about 10+years ago and I still recall it today. In fact I only just found out the title of the film just now! It really is a haunting movie, particularly when both girls are spying on John Hurt's adulterous character and the moment she shoots her best friend on the beach - I couldn't believe what I was seeing! Shall try to hunt down a copy of it, to watch it again.

If anyone has a copy of this please let me know

Like the previous poster, I remember this drama, and it was gripping, a classic. I thought the end was a slight cop out, but in general it was amazing

i was put off by the little sweetheart title but saw it anyway and thought it was brilliant.

interesting fact about its first airing on BBC1 it was on the night of the lockerbie bombing and the film stopped for a news flash. it aired under the title Poison Candy

I remember seeing some of this film on bbc1 in about 1990 but as I was only 14-15 at the time I could stay up that late too catch the end 25-30 mins! It hasn,t been shown on t.v (as far as I know) since in england as I think the politically correct brigade will not allow it because it has somewhat paedophilia aspect too it. The film doesn,t seem to be available to buy here in the u.k either as I have searched numerous sites without success so far. Any advice on where I can purchase it would greatly appreciated.

Well shave my back and call me an elf.

I was just looking through some "Top 10 lists" about child actors and it reminded me of a film that stuck with me since I saw it on the Beeb in 1988 just before my birthday on the 22 Dec (In Britain, it reminds most people of the awful Lockerbie bombings). It stuck with me because I was 11 at the time and, ahem, rather fancied Elizabeth. I was gutted when she was shot and to this day, I only remember 2 bits of the film - her being shot and rolling down a dune (to some dramatic music), and (SPOILER) her looking rather cheesed off covered in a blanket after being rescued at the end.

I guess the film made quite the impact. I could never find it as I thought it was called "Poison Candy" - I didn't know about the alias "little sweethearts". I was just surprised to that other people remembered exactly the same parts of the film, watched at the same channel at the same time all these years later! The power of movies, eh?

I just watched this movie on This! Channel 5-2. I enjoyed it only because I like bad movies but I do have to say that I didn't think the ending was a cop out, it was actually the best part. You Go, Elizabeth!!

I too watched it this weekend with my 9 & 7 year old nieces on "This." The TV guide channel stated that the movie was about a blackmailing 9 year old not a gun wheeling/shooting one. However, it was a good movie. For a movie without cartoon characters I can say it really captured their attention. They were extremely disappointed at the end. They wanted the 9 year old shooter to "get in trouble." However, it make for great discussion about right and wrong, good and bad, guns, etc. They were also glad that Elizabeth got away and lived.

No way!

That's exactly how I remember seeing it!!

We must have been watching it on the same night (it WAS BBC2 btw - BBC2 showed way more interesting movies at that time anyway...still do, I bet).

I just remember how stark and weird everything was and how even though it was set in sunny Florida it was really 'dark' - 'incandescent noir' indeed :) And what about how the little girl blew-away her best friend - a 9-year-old psycho!

Gonna have to check out where I can get a DVD/video...
