How did it end?

Doug Vickers (John Beck) did it. She was wanting to sell the mine her family owned and doing so would have left him in the cold in his opinion. He was in cahoots with Lisa, the ex of Billy. But Lisa realized he was going to screw her over so she faked Sara's death and kept her in a cabin with her. Someone working for Perry Mason went there, figuring she was the killer and got a HUGE surprise when he looked in the cabin and found Sara very much alive and well. He brought her into the courtroom as Perry Mason was exposing Doug on the stand. He swore his innocence and begged Sara to believe him but of course everyone knew what he was, especially when Lisa told everyone the whole plan. Doug was also to blame for a relative of Sara's that had left her traumatized for a long time. Billy and Sara are reunited.

The death of Sara's twin sister Amy was not Doug Vickers' fault; however, Amy and Sara's cousin Skip revealed that Doug knew Amy's murderer (James Masely), and withheld information at the trial. Doug, who was on the sherrif's posse at that time, killed Masely to make sure that his friendship with Masely remained unknown, as Doug was worried that if Amy and Sara's father (his then-boss) knew about it then he would be fired.
