I didnt believe for a second

that David was suicidal

Then you've never known anyone who is suicidal, or at least you think you haven't. Someone who is suicidal doesn't necessarily sit around all day with their head hanging and crying their eyes out. I think the part of David was played well. He showed some of the characteristic signs that most people only see in hindsight. He had high anxiety, he was becoming withdrawn. It was obvious he was going through something, but he tried not to let it show. He also didn't talk to his closest friends about it. Many people who are contemplating suicide, especially a man at his age, DON'T share their thoughts about it with other people. The keep it to themselves and that is what leaves their family and friends behind wondering why they did it.

I agree. It was an extremely good portrayal. You can see that a lot of the little things started to bother him. He was getting more stressed out, and everything seemed to bombard him at once. Even though, to his friends and family, he might not have acted like anything was wrong, but if you follow him from the beginning of the movie up until he jumps, and pick up the hints of frustration, it's clear that he looked like he was feeling the walls close in around him, and couldn't take it anymore.

I was really struck by the way David clicked "on" and "off" at the party, smiling and dancing when people approached him or looked at him, and drifted away when they didn't.

That's the whole point. Nobody in the movie believed he was, either.

I know two people who committed suicide. In hindsight, there were signs, not obvious but there were signs. They were withdrawn, sometimes tense and anxious. No one ever knows what someone internalizes.

Nobody believed that David was suicidal, he never displayed any tormented feelings he was having to anyone. His family and friends never saw the signs. He had the life most guys would envy, but having it all does'nt always make you happy, and David was just dying on the inside.

I think the scene with the principle was really important. When he learned he got into the school, his reaction seemed to be of someone that was panicking and thinking no, no this isn't part of the plan. He had it all mapped out. He may not have known the exacts of how he would kill himself but he at least knew he'd be doing it ASAP, before Chris could get his package.

Also, just to add.. The scene with his brother broke my heart.

Also sad that he was trying to pass down some musical knowledge to Chris because he himself knew he'd not be around longer and wanted Chris to really USE his talent and not squander it. Kind of ironic in a way I suppose.

That's what makes it so realistic.

A great scene is when the principal is talking to his boss and says "I sensed something, but I thought he was just nervous over college, like everyone else. If he'd only told me. Maybe he tried. Maybe that was his problem - he just couldn't."
