very underrated

I thought this film was one of the very best film of 1988. I remember the first time I saw it, I went in to the theater thinking Keanu Reeves was going to ruin the film. Bill and Ted had been released at that point. I thought Reeves deserved an oscar nomination. I thought this film was right up there with 1986's River's Edge. Permanent Record sure did make me stop and think "what if" this happened to your best friend and there was nothing you could do. A+.

I think this is probably the most realistic and touching movie ever made about teen suicide.

Regarding the suicide: As often happens in real life, a bright, popular kid who seems to have it all makes an unexpected choice and kills himself.

Rather than try to explain the suicide, the film focuses on how it impacts the lives of those left behind. Perhaps knowing how much it will hurt those around them would make some people think twice about suicide.
