Genesis/Background of the Film

So were Percy Adlon and his wife driving through desolate California for some reason and inspired to do what probably started as just a fish out of water story? Anyone have any info on the background of the film and how it got going?

reply

Their own travel was at least the reason for the choice of location, as Percy Adlon says in his audio commentary on the DVD, and also for some details in the film, for instance the electrical "apparition" in the sky (or what it could be called more appropriately) which was one of their observations while there.

But the story itself follows the well-known narrative pattern of "the hero out of nowhere", and if I remember correctly, Adlon doesn't say anything about how the idea came into their minds.

Regards, Rosabel

P.S. Oh, and he said that he specifically wanted to make another film with Marianne Sägebrecht and the script was written with her in mind, but that's about all.
