Their own travel was at least the reason for the choice of location, as Percy Adlon says in his audio commentary on the DVD, and also for some details in the film, for instance the electrical "apparition" in the sky (or what it could be called more appropriately) which was one of their observations while there.
But the story itself follows the well-known narrative pattern of "the hero out of nowhere", and if I remember correctly, Adlon doesn't say anything about how the idea came into their minds.

P.S. Oh, and he said that he specifically wanted to make another film with Marianne Sägebrecht and the script was written with her in mind, but that's about all.
