Brenda's husband

One thing I couldn't quite figure out about the movie: What was the point of Brenda's husband watching what was going on from the car? Why didn't he just go back to her and join them, since he clearly was so interested in what happened? And did he finally come back in the end? In the film he enters the cafe, but you don't see how Brenda reacts or if they get back together.

i think the ending leaves you with the potential closure that brenda could reunite with her husband while jasmine and ruddy are talking about getting married themselves. of course, none of this is certain. brenda's husband stays away to see if Brenda needs or wants him around. without getting into too much psychology about brenda and jasmine's relationship or a feminist critique on the two women running the show in spite of their men leaving them: i'd say the real point of the movie is simply about the magic of the place, the intimacy and isolation, and how random relationships forge in such a ostensibly desolate, yet potentially lively place.

the word of the day is ineffable.

Yes, the real point is definately to show the magic of the place, I just think that the part with B's husband is left a bit out in the cold, sort of, yes, don't worry he is still there. It doesn't seem to me like she needs him very much and I don't think the scenes with him watching from the car gives a lot to the move.

this represents brenda's control over sal, the main female characters, brenda and jasmin, are the one's with power over the male subjects, this is also seen with rudi at the end. thus sal looking in on them is because he clearly wants her back but has no power to do so yet.

reply

Brenda and her husband hug in the end and he says "oh brenda, brenda" and she is smiling. So they do get back together.

We are Brenda's husband. Brenda's husband is us. Simple, ignorant, uninformed about the situation, a spectator on the outside, watching the story unfold, drawn in by the end.

There's a metaphor for ya.

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

reply

Simple, ignorant? He doesn't symbolize me, pal. He's just an idiot, as Brenda makes clear at the beginning of the movie. Just because it's an independent film doesn't mean every damned thing is a frigging symbol.
